Regrettably, MSN makes it impossible to use other SMTP servers with their service. They actually block port 25 in both directions, presumably as an anti-spam measure. I used to get calls all the time from students when I worked for University of Phoenix tech support. They could never use our mail server because of MSN.

BTW: It is in fact smtp.email.msn.com
It also requires SMTP authentication, and the user/pass for that needs to be the primary account data, not secondary and so on. At last check, they are also pretty anal about the reply address field not being an MSN return address.
