Hey I just moved in with a friend who uses DSL and suddenly I cant send email via outlook express or thunderbird. It says the port 25 for my SMTP connections is failing. Any ideas?

Is your Outlook/Thunderbird still pointing at your old ISP's SMTP server?

Get the info on the DSL Service providers SMTP, plug it into Outlook/Thunderbird and profit.

Basically you need to use the ISP's smtp server to send mail that your computer is currently connected to thus you are trying to use your old ISP's server but you are not on their network.

Yup. Many ISPs block connections to "foreign" SMTP servers on port 25. It prevents email worms from sending millions of emails directly to the Internet using home computers that have been hijacked.

If your ISP allows for authentication into thier SMTP server, you might be able to go into the server options in your mail client and enter your username and password. The other option is to just plug in your buddy's ISP smtp server information in your mail client.

Port 25 is used for SMTP, the outgoing mail protocol, and is often blocked by ISPs to cut down the spams whether they are intentional or due to infection. This is the reason why you are not able to send the mails. You should call your ISP for further help.

It would help to know the new ISP so we can get the correct SMTP Port for you to use.
However, you can try Port 465 as that is what most Mail Services will tell you to use
if port 25 is blocked by the ISP .. Give it a shot and let us know

I did some checking and found that Bell South does in fact, filter Port 25 as normal procedure.
This is to stop spam. The only way around it, is for you to contact Road Runner and also
Yahoo Small Biz to see if they have an Alternate Port to use in place of Port 25 ... if they do
just set that port number into your email client, such as Outlook

Try Port #26 or Port #587 or Port #2500
