these ain't msnbc.com pics... these are the full-res originals. they've got to be coming from a newsroom with full access to the wire feeds from Iraq. They're awesome, but reuters/AP/media companies would flip.

I see the snipers in the pictures use bolt action rifles. Is there some benefit for snipers to use bolt action sniper rifles vs using semi auto sniper rifles?

The advantage of bolt-action rifles are that they're much more accurate in firing the rounds over very long distance. I'm not a gun nut, but I suspect that the firing/loading mechanism in semi/auto rifles doesn't permit pinpoint accuracy in range 400+ yards. Also, Sniper's motto is "One shot, one kill", they don't really need the power of semi/auto rifles. They rely on stealth and acurracy over sheer firepower. (Not to mention the recoil in firing semi/auto rifle would ruin any long-range aim)

P.S. From what I've read and seen in History Channel, Sniping is UBER harder than what's portrayed in games. Snipers need to calculate windspeed / direction, ballistic of the bullet, and the range of the target. They also have to wait for DAYS! for their target to come into their scope.... I would probably give up in 10 min.
