Smoothest Linux OS

Hello again everybody. I recently got another 160gb hdd. Wanting to install Linux on it. Im currently running Linux mint 17 and things aren't so smooth. I have a 6gb ram with a core 2 duo processor clocked at 2.33ghz. Anyone know a smooth experience Linux distro? Preferably based on ubuntu/debian.

What do you mean "things aren't so smooth"? Your PC is plenty quick enough, although that 160 GB HDD capacity is a bit weird unless SSD.

Usually people recommend Mint to newbies. Xubuntu is another option you should try. If neither feels 'smooth' -or you cannot configure them to your liking- you might have to give up on linux.

6GB of RAM are plenty so swap shouldn't be a problem. Also there is plenty of CPU power. What graphics do you have?

A lot of times, it would just freeze for a few minutes. I wasn't even using it for more than three hours and already I've experienced slow downs and freezing.
The hdd came with an old dell pc. 160gb.

This is a critical question to be answered.

Zorin OS is fairly "smooth".

I did try Zorin before, but I ran it off of a usb. And out of nowhere, I wouldn't be able to launch anything. The power menu would somewhat disappear, and if I try to power off. The dialog box would be filled with boxes instead of English words. Is that issue a Zorin issue or a usb issue?

This is not normal for any linux OS.

You have a hardware issue. Most likely: the CPU is overheating? Have you opened the box and made sure the fans are working alright? No blockage on vents? Also try to remove and clean the heatsink and reseat it, maybe it came off loose during moving?

Could also be HDD dying. If that is a 160 GB platter drive it must be 8+ years old, and if it is struggling to read and write it could well freeze the system for I/O bound operations.

Use free and open-source program like GSMartcontrol (available in Synaptic Package Manager) to see if there are any issues with your HDD, although with a drive that old do they even support SMART?

If you have spare HDD/SSD lying around try throwing that into system and see how it holds up.

Least likely: maybe the motherboard or USB ports are dying, they could be blocking input from keyboard and mouse, thus giving the impression of freezing. In this case it won't make sense to put money into fixing the system, sell it for whateve you get.
