Smoking (USB2 external enclosure)

I posted this in another thread, but I thought it deserves its own thread. I bought from them a smaller enclosure, same as everything else, just rebadge.

$8 shipping for me in Masachusetts.

Does anyone know the chipset?

Is this retailer reputable?

I was starting to lean towards a 3.5 rather than a 5.25 and perhaps a Plumax over a Bytecc but this is very tempting.

Does anyone know the difference between the ME-320U2 and the ME-325-U2?

I've seen the packaging before but can't recall the company name.
It must be OEM'd by Bytecc for this company.

If Bytecc put a lesser chipset in this for this company to make it cheaper, I'd have to kick myself if I get this to save a few bucks over the Bytecc or Plumax.

The Plumax cases have ball bearing fans. I don't know about the Bytecc.

If it's $8 for the first item. I wonder if I could get 2 of these for $8-$10 total shipping.

Thanks

ditto here although I want it as cheap as possible. I don;t care if it's super fast (it's for backups only), and it's for a 40G 5400 RPM although support for 120G/7200 RPM would be good for futureproof.

Why does the chipset matter? what should I stay away from?

I believe it has to do with ATA-6, and these are ATA-6 compliant.

so if I don't care about ATA-6 (i.e. up to 120G only) I might find something cheaper? $28 bucks shipped is just more than what I was hoping to spend for something that I would only use for backups. 🙁

Dude, you can't find it cheaper...... if you're complaining about $28 bucks shipped for a new USB2 enclosure, then I can't help you.

well, I haden't priced them before, I had never really thouught about using one, bug I just did a google search and you're right, this is a pretty good price.
...and I can't add. It's $25. I'm in.

Don't get this case.
It's the biggset POS flimsy case ever.

Mine doesn't even work right. I'm gonna toss it or let it go at shipping cost.
It intermittently works.

Is it the same enclosure? Did you play tank commander with your case? 😛

yes it's the same enclosure.
same design.
same shape color etc...

They have 3 versions of this I believe.
1. with USB 2.0 and Firewire connection
2. with just USB 2.0 Connection
3. with just Firewire Connection.

I have #2 and when it transfers files it would disconnect during transfer and won't come back on for some reason. It does this on large file transfers. 400+mb files.

Yeah, I remember something about this, when did you get yours? I think the new chip suppose to take care of that problem.

Like 6-8 months ago.
It's total garbage. Save your money and spend a lil extra and get the Maxtor Enclosures.
I've had 3 of those and those all worked flawlessly.

Check your chipset, I think it's suppose to be Oxford, if not, you got pwned with an older enclosure.

sounds like you have otheer problems. i have 4 of these two have 250Gb drives in them, one has a new 8X DVD burner in it and the other has a 120 in it. no transfer problems at all. have not costered a single dvd and have never had a problem connecting these to any of my systems.

I've heard something about the adaptor chipset itself overheating too, under heavy use. Could that perhaps be happening here? I wonder if a heatsink (+ small fan?) could be helpful on these things. (If there's even room to add something like that to these, that is.)

The price is good though.

PS. I've had problems with a "USB 2.0 Hi-speed 4-port mini-hub" that I picked up. It would suddenly just stop passing data. Would happen at random times, but it was a continual problem, so I got rid of it. It was the only USB 2.0 hi-speed device that I had ever connected to my mobo, which is a MSI KT4V-L with a KT400/8235 chipset. Has anyone else had this sort of problem with a KT400/8235? Could this be related to the problem that isekii is having?

I recall reading that the chipset is key.
One is slow and problematic and not worth getting at any price.
The other one is fine.
I don't recall reading about which chipset is which.
cr4zymofo mentioned Oxford.

Thanks papaschtroumpf, $11 for 2 is OK as long as the units are OK.

isekii, I agree. It sounds like you have either the old chipset or other problems.

I'm torn between getting this or a 3.5" aluminum for $34.

oxford = firewire

cheap is good, but more importantly i want a enclosure with a good chipset so i don't get corrupted files. heh.

There was a post a day or two ago about a place that was taking $5 off their external enclosures. I checked their prices and they were very, very good. You might want to check for that thread before buying this. I was interested only in the smaller enclosure for notebook drives so did not pay much attention to those for larger drives.

Bekker

for those having problems. u might wanna make sure the device in the enclosure is set to master. my roommate put a dvdrom into his enclosure and it didnt even recognize it as a dvd drive. detected it as a removable disk drive.

i also have the usb2/firewire 3.5" enclosure + firewire 5.25" enclosure and they've worked perfectly fine for me.

i purchased mine from CompGeeks like 2 years ago, so either those who are having problems gotten a bad batch? or the thing itself isn't configured correctly.
