Vortix,

I know you must be dreaming but I guess there is no harm in asking...LOL

The answer is NO!!!

I have 4 lines on AT&T and would love to have all four for $99. AT&T is the first to offer a flat rate as good as it is now. There is no national plan on the market with unlimited minutes, no long distance charges, and free roaming in network The only negative is the network is not complete yet by the end of this year they expect a 90% build out of their existing network. For me this is great as they have strong coverage in my local area and also decent coverage in most areas that I travel.

Down here in Sacramento, CA, we have 2 unlimited service providers, SureWest Wireless (Formerly RCS Wireless) and MetroPCS. SureWest starts at $33 a month with a 2 year contract, they use CDMA phones and operate in 1900 Mhz spectrum. MetroPCS has only one plan, $35 a month with no contract, they are on a 3G network and will soon roll out with thier internet access on the phones which is up to 153 Kbps and they will also use compression which will make it faster. Well.. now we will have 3!! I think that AT&T will be good for the business users and not the residental users. If it's on the GSM network, that will be great. Down here, we only have 2 cell phone providers that operate on the GSM network, T-Mobile (VoiceStream) and Cingular. The GSM network is great for people who travel over seas like my dad because you can just by a card and you should be able to use the service with any provider that operates on that network (just about all over seas providers do). Anywayz.. thanks for the information!

I checked out the "coverage" of the AT&T GSM "network", and my initial
enthusiasm dropped, because it seems my area is about the size of
a postage stamp. What do they do if I take an hour's drive out of my
network? Anyway, though the deal has its tempting aspects, I remind
myself how much I despise AT&T Wireless, and for those who want
to know why...

I usually just watch, but I have to jump into this one. For those who think
Worms above is a bit extreme, I had a similarly negative experience with
AT&T. I have two cell phone plans, Verizon and AT&T (my wife's). Everything
is OK, as long as you stay within the bounds of THEIR rules. But if you cross
them in any way, you will get majorly rocked. In my case, the phone I was
using started to get flaky connections. I complained, and they sent an "upgraded"
phone for "free". The words of the CS rep was "totally free, and it won't even
show up anywhere". When it arrived, it was twice as large/heavy, and my wife didn't
want to use it. She was unhappy with the new phone to endure another month of
patchy service. Finally, when she called back, they said that a month had passed
and that we were under a new service plan! By "accepting" the new phone, we
had unwittingly de facto signed up for another 2-year plan! I told them that the new
phone was supposed to be totally free, that it was physically unacceptable and that
we never turned it on nor activated the service on it. I argued over 10 hours, over the next week, with over
5 CS reps and 3 managers. It was hopeless...they are the most unreasonable
people I have ever talked to. My wife just wanted me to give up and put the
whole thing out of her mind. So, they forced us to accept the new plan or change
to another plan, but either way, to stay with them for another term. Actually,
there are a ton of other infuriating details, such as later finding out that the
"upgraded" phone was actually the $50 list price starter phone, whereas
we originally had that $200 Nokia that was popular last year. Also, when the
terms changed, we were charged $300 for the next bill, because the new
plan had no "promotional minutes" anymore, which meant that we lost the free
night/weekend minutes, and so they charged us full price for those calls, etc.

umster,
It maybe to late to help, but...

By "accepting" the new phone, we had unwittingly de facto signed up for another 2-year plan!

For legal reasons you unable to "sign" a contract longer then 12 mths via the phone; you have to go to a local store and sign the paperwork in person.

You're free phone is based on a number of factors, including tenure w/ the company, number of past credits, and how much you spend. If you're on a 29.99 plan, don't be surprised that you don't get a free $200 phone; AT&T has to make money too. To be honest I foresee the wireless companies moving away for "free" phone. They lose a good deal of money on the phones.

Every plan has promotional NW mins, some you may just have to ask for....

Nice thing about AT&T, if you decided that you used way too many minutes this month, you can switch your plan the last day of the billing cycle and the entire month's billing cycle is switched to the new plan, so if you pick a higher minute plan you can save lots of money... Same thing with using less minutes, you can pick the plan that best suits the minutes you used the previous month to save as much as possible..

I know this...but AT&T has not always given the cheapest plans (I work for a cell phone retailer, and yes, you can switch plans, even mid-month, with any service provider). I personally am a fan of Sprint PCS, mainly because they have the best phones and have the highest rebates (however, Cingular offers phones for cheaper prices without rebates.)

As far as plans go, I never liked ATT because if you get their nationwide plans, they cost more and have NO night & weekend minutes (at least in my area.) Other than that, Cingular and SPCS are comparable in plans. (Although I recommend Cingular to people who travel a lot.)

While I am a happy ATT customer, I haven't made the switch to GSM yet. Planning on it.... just doing our research. For all of you that are questioning the specials here is ATT's web page...

http://www.attws.com/mobileinternet/multiband_charter.jhtml

You need to watch the area coverage as that will make a difference. You also need to be aware that this promotion is limited to either a 1 year or 2 year service contract.

What I want to know is can I take the GSM phone and hook it up to my laptop and use the unlimited minutes? If I can then I'll be switching in a heartbeat. I miss my richochet wireless connection.

Good luck in your search for the perfect plan....

I have two questions about all this.....I'm with AT&T right now, but I don't want to switch over to GSM until we can get a family plan......anybody here an AT&T rep or know one? The guy I talked to said that they would roll those plans out, but not until their nationwide build was almost done, and he suggested around the holiday season...

Lastly, and possibly most important to me..........will AT&T ever offer the Motorola v70? :D
