The DWL-500 is actually a standard DWL-650 D-Link WiFi card and a PCI-PCMCIA adapter card included. The PCMCIA card is identical to the one you would get packaged alone, with the DWL-650 sticker, integrated antenna, everything.

The PCI adapter has a Ricoh RL5c475 chip and works with many other PCMCIA cards.

The DWL-500 is being replaced by the DWL-520 which has the WiFi electronics integrated into the PCI card, and an external antenna connection (reverse SMA?)

At $40, it's worth buying just for the DWL-650. Toss out the PCI adapter. That's what I did, anyway.

The DWL-500 goes for less than the -650 on eBay.. go figure.

At the microcenter I went to they were out of DWL-500, so they were substituting DWL-520 (integrated PCI wireless card - not removable PCMCIA). Since I was getting it for a desktop, I didn't mind.

Installing it in XP Home was a pain since the XP driver wasn't to be found on the CD that came with it, but available in an older download on the website:

self-extracting zip with XP driver.

Also if XP built-in wireless config doesn't work, try the setup.exe in the same download.

Edit: to clarify, above drivers are for DWL-520

Don't know when it started, but the PA Microcenter said it's a discontinued item and they don't have any.

Don't think the DWL-500 will work with XP. Not listed on D-Link's site as XP compatible.

This will work with XP. Have it currently functioning with it. You will need a different drivers than the one provided.

1) This works with XP. I am using it now.
2) It will work fine with the builtin XP drivers. As that is all I have ever used.

I overheard the manager briefing several workers,
Apperenly, the DWL-500 is discontinued and no longer carried, the list for the PCI version is $80.

A PM would be killer, I couldn't find a part number at any of the common B&Ms,
Can anyone find that in a cataloug?? (OD, OM, St, BB)

I went to the Dallas, Tx frys to pick one up last nite and they had a disclaimer that said the picture and model number on the ad was incorrect.
So the DWL-520 model without the removable pcmcia card is the actual one for $40, at least at my local microcenter.
I would have preferred the dwl-500 but, I needed one anyways and brought it, they have tons left.
