smokers - why do you drive with the window down when you smoke?

I smoked on and off for years. I recently quit (again!) and I have always found the exhaled smoke, and the smoke coming from the cigarette itself to be extra nasty, though what I sucked into my lungs was completely enjoyable. When I smoked during driving, I had the window "cracked open" to let the "second hand" smoke out because it bothered my eyes, smelled terrible and was a nuisance, yet I had no problem smoking more than a pack a day. Is that an enigma?

Like I said here, the second hand smoke is nasty.

Well, when I smoke in the car, I have my window halfway down, and I ash/blow smoke out the window. I also 'air out' my car after i'm done, by rolling down both windows for a couple minutes.

I do this because the cloth interior of my car sucks up the smoke smell, and if I had my windows up, it would completely reek. When I have the window down, and I 'air out' the car after I'm done, the smell is either gone, or close to it. A light, weekly febreze-ing makes it smell all nice and pretty inside (no lingering smell). I doubt that even a heavy febreze-ing would help much after years of 'windows up' smoking, when the smell has permeated the cushions.

Also, with the window down (and the 'air out' process), I (myself and my clothes) smell much less like smoke after I get out of the car, and am therefore much less offensive to non-smokers with sensitive noses.

Another reason I am trying to avoid having my car smell, is to help preserve resale value if I ever decide to sell it. A car that reeks of smoke will attract fewer potential buyers than a normal smelling car.

Hope this clears things up.

value
using the ashtray lowers the value, you can always replace the ashtray lol
i always drive with the window down,it wasn't because of the smoke.
i find it harder to breathe without a window down.

So far the main reason presented is for visibility, which is quite logical.....any other major reasons?

Have you even bothered to read the replies to your own pointless post? Or would that tax your slug-like brain too much?

I don't mind them having their window open when they smoke. But people that toss their cigarettes out the car window are stupid. That's what your ashtrays are for.:|

It's so ugly to see hundreds of cigarette butts on the side of the roadways.

flinging them out at night going 70+mph provides some dsitracting entertainment.
i have also heard birds pick them up to make nests with them 😀

You know what, you are completely right. I never thought about this. If they don't like the smell of smoke or sitting in a car filled with smoke than they shouldn't smoke in public. Many times I have stood in line or sat next to smokers at some show and all their smoke just goes straight into my face. It's REALLY ANNOYING. I don't care if people want to smoke or whatevers, but at least be considerate of others.

I've smoked a pack a day since I was 14. I smoke in my car. I roll the windows down. It stinks.

I've ridden in a car with an on-the-road salesman who smoked about two packs a day, in his car, with the windows up. I would get out of his car feeling a little sick.

I also ask for a seat in the non-smoking section when I go out to eat. Face it, the sh!t stinks.

I like this thread...

Kindof reminds me of all those idiots that pull up and park next to me before I finish getting into or out of my car. They pop out, toss their smoking butt on the ground and walk away.

What do I do? I enjoy it if their car window is open (summer) or if they have a pickup - I walk over, pick the butt up, and toss it back into their car or truck. At least I'm picking up their litter for them... though I don't really care much if their car happens to burst into flames at some point later.

MY world isn't your ashtray. And no, I'm not a tree-hugger either.

As for the official subject matter? Well damn, I don't understand it much myself. But then again, I don't understand much why people choose to smoke in the first place (I've done it myself for a short while, and it didn't make me feel cooler or more attractive - it kindof made me feel... stupid.

I'm with you on this one. I smoke, and I roll down the windows. I don't smoke when others are in the car though, or smoke in other people's cars. Even though I smoke, I don't like being clouded int he smoek either, it does stick. I go to my mother's for the Buc's football games, and have to get a fan or open a window, my whole family smokes and the cloud gets to be too much for me. When I smoke at home, I smoke out on the patio...

I have to agree, I find it very annoying when smokers think they can just toss their butts out the window. I'd love to see a cop slap one of these guys with a $500 littering citation.

they're with me. if you wish to have them back, paypal me $5,000,000 US FUNDS. They might have some stains on them though...

An ashtray was actually a $175 option in a previous car I had.

I crack the window to keep down the staining of the interior.

Why are non-smokers such assholes? Answer my question, and I'll answer yours.

Hey now. Not all non smokers are assholes. I have never smoked more than the occasional cigar and I am vehemently oppossed to the stupid ass law in they passed here that does not allow a business owner to make the decision as to whether or not they wish to allow smoking on the premises.
