yes, let it all out 😛
your CPU was getting very high (temps that is)

Here it goes, I really didn't think it would die that easily. I was doing some testing on an old system before getting ready to post it for sale! Just pulled things together and was gonna do a post test. I got lazy and didn't put on a fan cuz I figure, it will just be a flash then I am turning it off.

Well , it didn't post and I saw smoke. However the board did shutdown though, so does that mean the cpu IS STILL SENDING SIGNALS?

If it boots back up again you can probably continue using it, at the risk of total malfunction at any time.
It could be a crappy thermal compound or particles left on the top of the CPU which burnt.
I've fried some CPUs but I've never seen smoke coming out of itself yet 🙂

Correction:
Oops, I guess if it didn't POST it's done with 🙁
Physical system power-off using the switch signal is just mobo functionality, I think.

Stupid question but if that happens, can we assum it's fried?
Reminds me off what my teacher said on the first day of my electronics class way back in the day. "It's no good unless you can put the smoke back in it". 😉
had to be an AMD.....

i got smoke from a se440bx-2 and it still works 2years later just fine. try using it befor you throw it away.

No, it just means that the CPU got REALLY HOT. :brokenheart:

Well if it turns out that he really did burn up his CPU then we can all learn from this hopefully because I seriously thought you could post a CPU with out a fan or heat sink! Well just send it back to intel, no biggie.

Yep you have to ALWAYS have a heatsink at least. A friend of mine was working on his system and about to boot it when I stopped him. I said you can;t start it without a heatsink. He juts said, but it will only be for e a minute.

It only takes seconds to kill a CPU with out cooling. Look at it this way, heatsinks have been in use since the P1 days, let alone the Athoon XP, P3, P4 etc...
