Hi
I have Verizon DSL hooked up to win me and i just got another pc with XP
I decided to get the barricade router to share dsl, files, and printer....is that a good decision?
How much would that cost me?

How does the barricade printer serving work?...i can just hook up any printer to it or just the network capable ones? Can i plug in a parrallel port to it or something???

Would it be easy to install the router on ME just as easy as it is on XP cause i can trasnfer the dsl to the new pc

Would you suggest the barricade or the netgear rt314 or something of the like?

Search for SMC in this forum and you will find a wealth of information, probably more than this thread could handle!

Personally, I have the Netgear unit and it works great. They are all pretty similar, though -- Linksys, SMC, Netgear, etc.

Good luck!

Hey rkd. I just posted a suggestion in that other thread with the Barricade router. The print server for the Barricade works great. If you have a parallel port printer, just plug that into the print server, and download the port monitor utility from SMC's web page and install that on each computer. It doesn't matter which PC you set it up on. It's best to do it on your primary computer (mine is on my XP computer with Roadrunner service). Just keep the Barricade. The router will not give you problems, it's just that you need to figure a way to set it up. If you're on PPPoE, just go the PPPoE setup part of the router administrative menu and enter all that info. Hope this helps.

thanks...although whats the difference between the br and the abr ???
ive been reading that this routers been giving verizon dsl users problems and that with this router you cant download off kazaa/morpheus and such programs
im really psyched on the printer server feature if its not for that i would prob get a netgear router without hesitation
anyone know where i can get this for cheaper then $100 (its $100 in compusa)?

These are some answers to the FAQs

My Barricade cannot get connected using PPPoE?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update to the latest Firmware. The time-out feature of the Barricade of the original firmware was too short to complete the login process for some ISPs

My WAN type is PPPoE. I cannot connect to the Internet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since your WAN type is PPPoE, your ISP must assign you an account name and password. Please configure the WAN type as PPPoE and fill the setting items properly. And then, make sure your computers are correctly configured and all network cables are properly connected. Next step is to verify the coaxial cable or DSL line is properly attached on your Cable or DSL modem. Refer the manual of your modem to verify it works normally.

Once you have verified this connection, check to make sure the network cable between modem and the Barricade is well connected, and you have a green link light. Power off the modem for a few minutes and power on it again.

Upon reboot your computer and SMC Barricade should be connected to the Internet.

Try this also: DSLReports Verizon Online DSL Forums. There might be someone who has the same problem as you and there might be a solution. :)

I've got the wireless barricade... had it for about a year now and absolutely love it. Have never had a problem with it at all. The printserver works great.

I just got verizon DSL here in NC and it's been working fine using my Barricade. One thing about the printer server, it won't work if you have a multifunction printer/copier/scanner thingy. For those, you must be able to turn on bi-directional support for the parallel cable which won't work on the Barricade. I found this out the hard way when I wanted to share my laser printer/copier with my other pc's. Fortunately it works on my HP Deskjet printer.
Other than the multi-function printer not working, I'm satisfied with this router.
