SMC wireless LAN

I just bought SMC wireless broadband router 7004AWBR and wireless PC card in the laptop, I am getting download speeds of 320kbps, where as the desktop which is connected directlly with cable I get 650kbps. The speed doesnot change even if I am within 10 feet radius of the base station. Any comments. Is SMC PC card no good?

Were you downloading a file off the internet?
The same file or a differnt file from another location?

It sounds like you were downloading a file off the internet, and trying the measure the speed like that. If you really want to measure the speed, take a 10 meg file and send it from one system to another while on your wireless lan and measure the speed, then vice versa. Time it and that will give you a actual better idea.

Nightfall thanks for the reply,I have not tried that yet, but shouldn't I get the same speed as the wired computer, while using the wireless for downloading from web. Does this mean download speed from the DSL deteriorates once it is converted to wireless pockets. I have not set up the network yet as of yet. I am just using it for sharing internet. But I would like to know whether this is happening to others.

You're going to get different speeds at different times even from the same server downloading the same file. It just depends on how many people are requesting that file at one time. The best way to test the speed on a network is intranet. Send files from computer to computer within the network. That's the best way to judge the speed of your network.
