SMC seems to claim much better performance in distance for their 802.11b devices (up to 1500 feet at 1Mbs)

I am considering the base station and PCMCIA combo from Outpost for $369.

I want the base station for 2 reasons.
1) I don't need to have my desktop PC turned on
2) I can take the base station on the road (Hotels, friends house, etc.)

Has anybod had experience with SMC 802.11b?

SMC is not WiFi certified, any comments on that?
