Howdy,

I just ordered a Barricade 4 port router with printer port (about $68 or so) and should get it the middle of next week. I'm running 2 PCs with Win98 on them and one cable modem for Internet access. Just looking for anyone with firsthand experience with this router and anything I might need to know tos et it up that isn't totally obvious.

Thanks in advance,

hey never used one.. but I know there is a big user base dedicated to this router over at Dslreports.com.
I have heard several good as well as "not optimum" things about the barricade. I myself was in the market for one until I just gave up, bought a 5 port hub ($7/ebay) & get multiple IP's (DHCP) via my cable modem (don't tell my provider!). Then just put zone alarm on each machine with a routable IP for a firewall solution. Hope it works well for you!

I have the 4 port SMC. The setup was fairly simple. It has a WAN port in the back where you can plug in your cable modem to as well as the printer port. It can work in either DHCP or static mode for its settings. Its up to you. I tested them both out and it worked fine. It also has a built-in DHCP server so you should be able to just plug and play with your computers. Otherwise you can just set the ip settings statically. The router ip should be 192.168.123.254, I believe that cannot be changed. I've not had to touch mine since the day i bought it. You access the router thru explorer. Just pop in the ip and it will come up with its menu. The rest is pretty self explanatory if you understand basic TCP/iP. It comes with a CD for the printer port driver that you need to install on any computer that will be using the printer (if connected on the router).

I think it (the IP) can be changed. THis is the one with setup that uses a web page, and a print server built in? Damn, I could be thinking of a Netgear. An emplyer of mine uses one at home.. Whichever it was, setup was simple! :)

I just got this router about a month ago. It is wonderful. You can change it's IP address to conform with your internal numbering scheme. It has a web based interface to change all the options. It has a built in firewall, and print server. It does inable you to connect many computers with only one IP address from your ISP. It also does DHCP if you need it, along with a few other bells and whistles. If you have @home cable there are a few things you have to change differantly but most of those are explained.

If you need any help with it, just PM me
