SMC 2404WBR 802.11 Router $24.88 AR @J&R

Stay away from this router!! I got my replaced twice before I was given a refund. This router is not even worth a dollar. Router locks up in less than an hour, and a hard reboot is needed to fix. The SMC rep I spoke with said that this is a known problem, and new firmware was supposed to fix, but still hasn't as of yet.

i have one of these - bought used of the FS/FT forum, using it as an AP, works like a champ with an SMC2435W card.

SMC usually makes great wireless products. i have their router + 4prt switch and it's been very reliable. havent tried their wireless router yet. but for $25AR, this is a good deal.

when u say lock up, does the internet stop working OR u can no longer access the router. i've had a problem where the router wouldn't renew the domain and i had to reset it too (netgear). turned out it was the isp's fault cause 2 months later w/o any changes to the router + constant complains to CSR, the problem disappeared.

The router itself would lock up. I couldn't access the router through the web client or the provided software. The replacement router I was given would turn all of its activity lights on when it would lock up.

i agree.
this router sucks.

search the threads, you'll see a lot of people had problems with it.

i bought a combo w/ the smc card, and the router would keep dropping signals with my orinoco card.
i never tried using the smc card.

tech support is friendly and speedy, but the router is garbage.

btw, you can find the card for cheap at ecost.com.

i'm now on a netgear wireless router. works gorgeously.

Triple that, their WIRELESS routers sucks!

However, their wired version (ABR) has been working flawlessly (but again, we want wireless).

Are you guys sure you are talking about this one and not the 7004AWBR? I had that one and it had a lot of problems, I thought the 2404WBR was pretty trouble free.

I have one too. Mine drops signal every once in a while. It comes back almost immediately but it's still annoying.

Not trying to thread crpa just being honest.

Run away from that router, it sucks big time. I had the locking up problems with that router, they kept coming out with new firmware. But, it never fixed the locking up problem. I still have an old BR series router, solid as a rock, but the wireless one are a plague. Just my opinion though...

I had a 7004AWBR for over a year and never had a problem with it.
I replaced it with a 2404WBR. It worked great until the router locked up and the wireless died. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, and it would only work as a switch, no wireless, no router functions. I couldn't get it to reset. I tried the hard reset as well. The SMC Tech Support guy didn't believe that I was doing the reset right, so he walked ot through with me 10 times over an hour until he finally decided maybe there was something wrong with it.
I RMA'd it and got a new one from SMC. So far so good on the new one.

It's a pretty good performer though. With the latest 4x firmware, I get throughput of 6-8mbps.

So how difficult was the RMA process? I'm not sure if I have the receipt or not. I ordered it online so maybe I can get a invoice that way.
How long have you had the new one up and running?

BTW I also have an older wired barricade and it has been running 24/7 for ~3 years. Rock solid. that's what made me want to stick with SMC but this wireless router is less than stellar.

de8212,
My old 2404WBR was only up for about 3-4 months before it died.
The RMA process was pretty painful, mainly because I had to talk to the tech support guy for almost an hour. It was very frustrating, because this guy had a VERY thick Indian accent and spoke very fast, I couldn't hardly understand a word he said. I didn't understand maybe 90-95% of the conversation. Anyway, at the end of the call, he finally gave me 2 numbers - a Case # and an approval # or something like that. I called Customer Support to get the RMA and was put on hold, at which time the voice said that they could now take RMA's online. So I decided to hang up and try their online RMA request system. That was pretty painless, I got the new router in about a week (I did the Advanced Replacement where I get the new one first, then send back my old one within 30-days).

They make you cover shipping your defective unit back to them, however.

I have only had the new unit for 2-weeks.
I leave it on 24/7.

I had the same problem SMC7004AWBR. I thought I was doing something stupid. It worked well for about a year. Then one day it just stopped working. The wired portion worked, but the wireless portion just died. I guess I'll try the netgeat brand, after seeing so many complanints for SMC

In an effort to provide correct information, can everyone who chimed in about the wireless sucking clarify if they actually had this model or the 7004AWBR?

Thank you for your cooperation.

I've had 7004VWBR for couple months now. Haven't had one single problem with it. Works great with my Apple IBook and Airport card.

My smc7004awbr just died yesterday. It only functions as a switch. Can't get it via http, doesn't respond to reset. Sounds like the same thing as gnat's router did. Will RMA then ebay, and replace with D-Link 714P+. D-Link and Netgear get a lot of nice reviews, and are more reasonably priced than Linksys. I had a non wireless Linksys 8 port that was worked like butter before I added wireless.
