See here

both computers running xp pro, connecting to a share on the "server" pc from the "client" pc, as in \\server\c$\movies\, and moving a few directories about 4GB each. the transfer speed settles at about 18 Mbps, instead of 70-80 like it's supposed to.

any idea what is going wrong? it takes just waaaayyy tooooo long....

First, what are you using to connect your 2 computers together? Are your cables hand made or are they machine made cables that you bought? If you are sure your cables are not the problem the next place to check is the drivers for your NICs and IDE controllers. I have seen many times before that improper/old drivers cause huge slow downs in network transfers.

Did one of the computers get set to half duplex? That would do it, too.

i use all store-bought 5e cables , all adapters and the router are set to 100 full duplex, the 100% on the graph in the link means 100Mbps. It's definitely above 10Mbps, too...

edit: as far as drivers, this is a fresh xp install on the dell 400SC (875) using Intel chipset and NIC drivers...

I just noticed (while checking driver issues...): the HD is set to PIO mode by windows! tried forcing it to DMA, no dice :( This is the slave HD, jumpers all correct, no reason it should be PIO (seagate Barracuda IV)

anyway, this is a different problem now, thx guys...
