Smashed my finger in the car door yesterday, now I can't go back to sleep because of the pain.

I am gong to cover it in Neosporin, and simultaneously ice it. Would Biofreeze and icing be a better idea?

I just wished this never happened. :(

UPDATE: Went to the doctor; he cold sprayed it, then made a small hole and let some of the blood drain. Whew! So much pressure, gone! Woot! :D It feels like a very minor wound now. :D

I already took 7 Ibuprofens in the last 20 hours. I already exceeded the limit (6). It's not broken. It's just the pressure of all the blood under the nail that's driving me nuts. I would rather not trephine it.

Use a sterilized pin or something to pierce the nail and get that blood out. A few seconds of pain is probably worth it.

I would rather have that done by my doctor. It sounds like I can make my finger prone to infection.

If its the pressure under the nail, then a pin is the correct answer. I just assumed it was broken because of all the pain! (I've been slamming my finger in doors since I was a kid :\)

I'm going to try the biofreeze + ice. Good night, hopefully. :(

get a rusty hacksaw and chop it off. Or a sterile needle and get some blood out. Or drink some booze. Those are your best options.

Then... go to the doctor. Why do you need to sleep so badly before you go? Just find an immediate care facility and go.

Speaking from experience, you WILL have to poke a hole to get the blood out. Your nail will grow back, but it'll look pretty nasty for a few months.
