Just . . . wow.

I just watched the pilot. It was so incredibly . . . SMART!

I wouldn't have thought network TV could deliver like this, it was as smart and ADULT, layered, deep and well done, so true in the details of the world it portrays, as any of the best series on premium cable.

As always, de gustibus non est disputandum and YMMV, but I was effing impressed.

Let me put it to you folks this way: I personally think Keith Talent (Len) would agree. 😎

Debra Messing is perfectly cast and the one ep I watched even survived the somewhat wooden performance turned in by Angelica Houston. Hey, maybe she'll shake off the rust and stand and deliver; she most certainly has the face and the famous name for it. :thumbsup:

Hmm I like gritty drama like Game of Thrones/Breaking Bad. Either that or a full-blown comedy like It's Always Sunny.

Would I like Smash? It looks like it's a Chicago-esque/Glee musical stuff. I don't really care for either.
 
The previews made me think it was going to be a dramatic version of American Idol so I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. 😛

You might not. You'd likely think of it as "Chicago-esque", but fluffy treacle like Glee it's most decidedly not.

It takes, imho, a fairly "gritty" and realistic view of the New York musical theater scene. For me, the portrayal rings pretty true.

Let me ask you this, did/do you like Mad Men despite it being about a non-Breaking Bad kind of world? If so, you're more likely to take to Smash.

If not, well, I've got The River cued up on the DVR and have some preliminary hopes for it. 😉

There probably are a ton of OT posters who would truly make little distinction between American Idol, Glee, the movie Chicago, and Smash.

I am not one of them.

I can't stomach the first two, but was entertained by the conscious theatric artifice of Chicago. Based on the one ep I just watched, Smash is different, deeper, and better.

Just mho.

I haven't seen Mad Men. Hm, I just may give it a shot. Strangely, I LOVE animated musical (all Disney), but am weirded out by live-action musical.

I'll check the pilot.

Sounds interesting. Not a fan of the first two either and enjoyed Chicago so I may give the show a shot.
 
Didn't watch it, but I got the impression that this show is deliberately designed to cannibalize the fans of Glee.

It's a formula that guarantees big musical numbers in every episode.

To me, that's a mere surface similarity. You couldn't pay me to watch Glee.

There's singing, but the similarities end there. None of the campy humor in Glee. I liked the pilot as well, and I've been a huge McPhee fan since her American Idol days.

Looks like a lot of eye-candy (all generations represented almost) and a DWTS/Glee focus.

It's popular today though so you really can't buck the system.

Doctor Who and Two and a Half Men have been my favs.

As a kid Doctor Who (since really young like 30 years ago) and Charlie since his character was a good representation of my adult life.

If you only have but a teen-age apocalyptic fanboy, special effects explosions, rogue cop cliche with a heart understanding of what "gritty" might mean, then, yeah.

But if you have any real-life idea of the dog-eat-dog world of being one of the 100 plus, almost equally talented actors who were adored superstars in their small home towns and now have foresaken the traditional job security of a standard profession to go share a disgusting, impossibly tiny, dirty and incredibly over-priced Manhattan walk-up in order to go to soul-crushing cattle call after cattle call, trying to beat the almost insuperable odds to a SAG card, let alone stardom, while working as waitron in some dive cafe -- getting 3-4 minutes to prove your talent before a group that doesn't give one good damn about you . . .

Well, then, Mr. World of Warcraft Warrior, Mr. Elaborate Fantasy World Consumer, welcome to a part of the real world where "grit" is not defined by body count and there are no Kings or wizards.

Smash is no fruity, shallow Glee.

Confusing the two would be like confusing Archie with The X-Men, or Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego with WOW.

Just sayin'. 😉
 
Funny but from the promos I figured it would be more akin to Fame than Glee...still not interested but I don't know why anyone would've thought it would be a bad musical comedy

Yeah, definitely more Fame than Glee. But what I think will make it more satisfying (to me) than Fame or Chicago is that, as a series and not a one-off, there will be more space to explore the many human inter-relationships behind the scenes of any production as they evolve over time.

Already in Smash you can see the testy clash of egos between the writers and the choreographer, who don't like each other but kind of need each other, and the agent none of them can really fully trust who schmoozes them all to try and make it work as she follows her own agenda, while she deals with the seedy, contentious side of finanancing the whole damn thing as a producer, too.

All this seediness and pettiness and semi-squalor is then occassionally broken up by the blinding glitter of a fully realized production number.

Great contrast. Human interest. True grit (<---giggle), without car crashes or one single alien . . . just a different kind of grit.

As I well know -- de gustibus non est disputandum -- Smash will not be most of OT's cup of . . . meat. <shrug>

Still, I was impressed enough with the pilot to brave OT's mighty collective scorn.
