Smartphones are great - except for one thing

The auto landscape/portrait switch bugs the hell out of me. Whether it's the iPhone or Androids, I cannot figure out why there isn't an option to manually choose landscape or portrait.

This is especially troublesome when you are laying on your bed or couch while holding your phone. Do these phone makers even use the phones themselves? Sometimes I don't want landscape mode even though I'm holding my phone horizontally.

Add a god damn physical button to switch between landscape and portrait already.

I cannot be the only one who's annoyed with this.

Why not just use a quick toggle to lock your orientation? It isn't quite as convenient as a hardware button but it still takes all of two taps to accomplish.

you can turn it off on most (all?) android phones. if its not an option on the default launcher pretty much all the other ones have it as one

Easy as hell to do in android. Theres a multitude of apps you can choose from if your launcher doesn't easily support it.

Then one click on the homescreen or notification bar, and you're good to go.

If it's not already built into your ROM, you can just install an app like Rotation Locker which will let you lock it into landscape or portrait any time you want.

As a frequent reader of email and news stories while laying in bed while waking up in the morning, my iPhone used to stay in portrait mode exclusively. It's only on iOS 6 that I'm leaving it unlocked and only locking/unlocking as I need it, and I think I can put that solely on Safari's full screen mode in landscape. I would never browse landscape because I felt like the space taken up by the menu bar and address bar made it pointless, but I'm enjoying it a little bit more on the iPhone 5 now.

I wish Orientation Lock would stick to portrait for everything except for video...

It doesn't? One of the things I liked about my time with the GNex was that I could lock it, but when playing back a video I could rotate the phone and it would go full screen.

I think a physical button would be great. I have the sgs2 and it has a quick setting for orientation lock but I would still prefer a physical button.

Or instead of enabling the rotation lock, most devices won't rotate from landscape to portrait mode if turned upside down (home button on top)

Another reason I still cling to the idea of sliders. I have autorotate turned off; so it's just closed = portrait, open = landscape.

and samsung has an entire department working on how to make an exact copy of it.

don't be silly, you don't need a whole department work on something that's already in the phone years ago before apple decided to strongarm competition out of "their" market.
