Smart phones: Too big for your pants? CNN says so

Even wearing one of my skinny jeans, my Droid fits in the pocket just fine. Obviously, its only a 3.7in screen, but I don't see any issues with the Droid X or similar 4.3in devices. I can, however, easily see one's hand getting tired from holding the phone on an extended call. Which, I feel, is something that happens with any cell phone, even the basic dumb phones. Holding one for hours to your ear means a long fight against gravity. But, thats what they make bluetooth headsets for. Just don't walk around in public with one on your ear. You look like an idiot.

(CNN) -- Something weird is happening to mobile phones: After shrinking from enormous Zack Morris proportions in the '80s and '90s, they're getting bigger again.

So big, in fact, that some won't fit in jeans pockets anymore.

The Dell Streak, which is set to be released in the U.S. later this summer, is the biggest of the big-daddy phones so far, with a 5-inch screen. The screen of the iPhone 4, by comparison, measures only 3.5 inches diagonally.

When held up to a person's ear, the Dell phone looks like a book.

The Streak's mondo screen has become the focus of much debate on the internet, with tech bloggers arguing about what kinds of pants you'd have to wear to carry it around in your pocket; how big your hands have to be to hold it; whether or not people will stare at you when you're using it; and, perhaps most significantly, what exactly constitutes a phone these days.

Is a phone just any device that can make calls? Or does it have to be portable enough to carry with you, regardless of how baggy your pants are?

As mobile phone technology improved, "there definitely was a trend for smaller and there definitely was a trend for thinner," said Ramon Llamas, a senior research analyst who covers mobile technology for IDC. "But I think we're seeing the pendulum swinging back in favor of larger phones."

Mobile phone makers are trying to "push the boundaries of what is acceptable in a pocket," said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis for consumer technology at the NPD Group.

Several Android phones -- which run on an operating system developed by Google, as opposed to those by Microsoft or Apple -- have come out with screens that are larger than 4 inches diagonally.

The HTC Evo and the Motoroloa Droid X, for example, both have 4.3-inch screens. Sony Ericsson is rumored, according to the blog Engadget, to be working on another 5-inch smartphone, the same size as the Dell Streak. (As a side note, the HTC Evo is so big that it comes with a kickstand).

In video reviews of these ever-larger phones, it seems almost to be a requirement these days for tech pundits to try to shove the things in their pockets as a way to determine whether the devices are truly portable.

In one such video, Veronica Belmont, co-host of a video show called Tekzilla, puts the Dell Streak in the front pocket of her pants only to find that about a third of the phone is still sticking out.

One YouTube video, titled "Dell Streak vs. Jeans," starts with a shot of a man's waist line, shown only from the thighs to mid-belly.

"The reason you're staring at my hips is that I'm going to show you what the Dell Streak is like, fitting in a jeans pocket," the host says. "Now, these jeans have got quite a deep pocket and, even still, it pokes out a little bit over the top. You can tuck it right in and there's still a corner coming out at the top there."

The man then proceeds to stuff the Streak into his back pocket, which he decides isn't such a good idea, either.

It sticks out, which could make it easily accessible to pickpockets, he says. "And you're certainly not going to want to sit on it."

Dell did not return CNN's phone calls about this story.

The other potential issue with large phones is that it can be difficult to hold them up to your face, depending how big your hands are and if your arms are strong.

When Chris Hall tested the Dell Streak for the British website Pocket-lint, he said his hand literally became tired and stretched-out from holding the phone.

He said he also got some stares from strangers.

"People are going to look at you in a funny way" when you're holding such a large gadget up to your face, he said.

Hall still gave the phone -- which is sometimes referred to as a small "tablet" computer rather than a large phone -- a good rating: 8 of 10 stars.

In a video review for the blog Engadget, Richard Lai takes a bit of a contrarian view, saying the Dell Streak is still small enough to carry comfortably in a standard pant pocket.

"Obviously you see a bit of bulge here," he says after putting the phone in his jeans pocket, "but you get that with any phones these days, really, you know? Sliding it in and out is no problem, you see?"

Lai does note, however, that, if you want to walk up a flight of stairs with the 5-inch phone in your pocket, you should "shift your phone as far to the side [of your pocket] as possible" in order to maintain a normal range of movement.

"But other than that we've had no real issues with it," he says.

Despite some fuss about the bulk of these 4- and 5-inch phones, there are some clear advantages to screens with more real estate.

As phones increasingly become internet portals, e-book readers and video players, having bigger screens makes them more useful, Llamas said.

Those functions are butting up against some long-held ideas about what a mobile phone is -- namely that it's a gadget that you can easily carry in a pocket and hold to your ear to make a call.

So maybe we need a new cell phone definition:

One that can fit in your cargo shorts.

I wouldn't either.

That kickstand comment was idiotic.

I think the size of the Evo is the biggest I would go. I think the droid x is a bit big because of it's larger bezel. I think all smartphones should be 4.3".

Now the Dell streak being 5", may be pushing it. 4.3" is pretty big already, but 5"? I can't even imagine how large that'll feel in the hand

Some people say the media is "liberal", some say it's "conservative". I say they're just stupid. It's much more accurate.

Seriously the EVO seemed huge when I first got it, but that was more of a result of a mentallity I have of what a phone should look like. Once I got used to it (which took about 5 minutes) I think it's a great size. I do think the 5" Dell might be pushing it, but I won't write it off until I've had it in hand.

Well, that's your problem right there. Women's jeans have much smaller pockets than men's jeans. Women are more likely to carry their phone in their purse.

The Streak was originally marketed as sort of a mini-tablet, right? But as far as I know it's going to require a voice plan, so it's really just a big phone. And that whole train of thought makes me think that whether something is a phone or a tablet depends on more than just the size, it depends on the features as well.

Must be a slooooooow news day for CNN.
Isn't there a war to report SOMEWHERE?

its CNN. They only report what Obama says is ok to report.

Wouldn't want to report on the 2 wars, 3 oil spills, North Korea threatening nuclear war, the majority of the country wanting a full political overhaul of Washington....

Naah. Lets report that cell phones have gotten bigger. Good job CNN!

Somebody is an idiot for making the smart choice and using a bluetooth headset for long calls? I don't get all this hate towards headsets. I don't use one, but I can't for the life of me figure out why anybody would think the PERSON using the headset is an idiot. If you don't like them that's fine, but they're necessary for a lot of people.

I'm surprised they didn't at least try to get some new Mel Gibson tapes or something.

I don't hate headsets, I hate the people who walk around with them on all day while not on a call.

He means you look like an idiot if you walk around with one ALL THE TIME, and not just when you're making a long call. I can agree with that.

I realize that nearly everyone on this particular sub-forum is a phandroid, but some of us agree with this. The EVO and Droid X are too big for me, its just my opinion. But I'm hardly alone in this.

The underlying OS has nothing to do with physical size of the device. I would laud Apple for making an "iPhone HD" if you would.

My point is try to express your opinions without throwing in terms like "phandroid" in posts where it's irrelevant.

but if Apple came out with a big screen iPhone, fanboys would be lining up to buy them.

We can now add large screens to the official list of things Apple fanboys bash even though they are wanted and/or needed.

Somebody on local craigslist was selling a Vibrant because "it's too big for my hands".

For those of you who think a 4" screen is too big, stop being a little girl and grow some man-hands. :awe:

I really want a Dell Streak (but I need the one with T-Mobile's 3G) though I have to say I would probably draw the line at a 6-7"+ screen on a phone.

Hmmm I wouldn't fault CNN for writing an article about how a 7" phone won't fit into pockets though... I think you want an iPad with a voice plan :D

I don't mean it in a derogatory fashion, hell I read the site phandroid.com regularly. Honestly, phandroid's call themselves phandroids so I don't see why you would insinuate that I mean it in some lambasting fashion. Its pretty clear that this sub-forum is full of droid users over any other OS, that is what I mean - so of course they are going to say this article is rediculous.

Any way. I wouldn't buy an "iphone HD", I like the size of the phone the way it is now. Actually, maybe someday when its paper thin and rolls up into my pocket because the whole device is simply an OMLED screen or something. Or some kind of folding device I can't really think about now.

My favorite droid phone is the incredible, which I like everything about except the battery life is as bad as the EVO. The Droid X would be the perfect phone if it was around 3.7 inches or so. This was a significant factor in forcing my hand back to apple and the iPhone4, the screen, size and battery being all of the deciding factors.

This seems to be the trend of the android phones, and because of it they are taking myself and others like me out of their market scope when I would otherwise be looking at droid phones.

but if Apple came out with a big screen iPhone, fanboys would be lining up to buy them.

We can now add large screens to the official list of things Apple fanboys bash even though they are wanted and/or needed.

Believe that if you want but a percentage of users won't buy the bigger iPhone because of the same reasons this article explains. I know you are going to put words into my mouth and assume actions on my part because I'm apparently "an apple fan" but you're wrong. I don't like anything apple makes other than the iPhone, and if it was, what I consider to be, too big like the Droid X, I wouldn't have bought it.

depends how big your hands are i spose... as it is, most regular phones are small enough to make my hand cramp up while holding them to my ear. my omnia (3.2" i believe) is big enough to be comfortable for the most part, but long calls will make my hand hurt from being curled up to hold it. the droid feels about normal to me, and im thinking the X would be great. i used to borrow a friends juke on occasion, and that thing was so small i couldnt get used to holding it at all. it was like the width of two of my fingers, i fumbled with that sucker all the time.

and the article was ridiculous.

I don't have any problems with the droid x's size, if anything it's the rubber coating sticking to pocket more than the size.
