Since I sold the 512mb Corsair Twin X pack , a 9800 np and an Audigy 2 for $420 I got greedy , but reality slapped me in the face , I'm upgrading to 1gb Geil ultra dual channel pack and a Sapphire 9800 pro (black pcb) instead . Be nice to have some comments on my change of heart.:wine:

That Sapphire 9800 pro (black pcb) is the inferior one. It uses 9700 Pro board. Unless you don't plan on overclocking or are getting great deal: < $150, I would not buy that board.

As for Geil, I like their ram and more is always better.

I wouldnt say it was a dumb move.
just wait for all these new damn cards to come out and mature some....not to mention drop in price a little :p
then pick one up :)

I dunno...I'm pretty sure you would have seen much higher framerates if you had put the money into the X800PRO. It's still very overpriced though, and the 9800PRO is one of the best price/performance cards on the market right now.

Tough call. I personally would have saved the $420 for something down the line. :)

i'm just gonna play the waiting game until ATi completely redoes the architechture. The X800 is tempting but just not worth it. I'll be getting a job during summer so i'll consider my options then.

Going to a gig of memory was a good idea, but from a 9800NP to a pro doesn't seem worth it. Couldn't your non pro OC to pro speeds? In the least, you could have saved $50 getting a powercolor 9800SE and softmodding it, and I believe that one is starting to come with R360 cores, so it should OC nicely. I need a new job as well, I want to get a 6800GT this summer :)

That's not a bad price but that black PCB Sapphire 9800 Pro is between 3-5% slower than true 9800 Pro and doesn't overclock that well.

I've never heard that it's slower. The ones Sapphire built on a 9700Pro PCB use the exact same cores and memory, and run the exact same clocks. They just don't O/C as well.

It's slower. Even at the same clock. There's an old review which benchmarked that black Sapphire 9800 Pro. I'm too lazy to google for it but it's around 3-5% slower at the same clock speed.

i dont think thats true , why would it be lower performance than a pro when it is a pro itself ?
