If you need an optical drive, the Averatec AV1050 is nice. It's very similar to the Sony and Fujitsu models.

It's 3.6 lbs, about 1/2lb lighter than the 700m

It's 1.16-1.36" x 10.47" x 7.97" vs 1.5" x 11.7" x 8.5" on the 700m

The screen is smaller, 10.6" 1280 x 768 instead of 12.1" 1280 x 800. I like the matte finish on it though, because it's less reflective. It's more usable in sunlight and under florescent lights.

Battery life is over 5 hours, much like the extended battery for the 700m.

Drawback: the touchpad kinda sucks, IMHO.

I have had one Averatec, and it sucked. Battery life was poor and construction extremely cheap.

I've only had the 1050. Longest I've run it on battery is over 6 hours. Construction is fine on it. Driver for the touchpad sucks.

It sounds like you're using it for typing notes, so I'll suggest an axim x50v. Anything more will probably be a waste in your situation.

I've played with an Averatec at BB/CC, what a small and impressive laptop. But bang for your buck wise I still prefer the 700m esp if you can use a $750 off $1499 coupon :)

Accessories? You can get those from anyone. Parts I can understand, but IMO they're pretty well built.

I wouldn't recommend the averatecs at all. I've seen many problems with those.

Yep, I bought one a year or so ago, it was even flimsy feeling, it went to eBay quickly...

Mine too, if you're careful you can pick one up for ~$700-800 use the $ you saved to extend the warranty.

So far on mine I've swapped out the mini PCI card for a 802.11b/g capable, bumped the memory up to a gig, and just replaced the keyboard for a whopping $35 after my cats knocked over a glass of iced tea on it.

I've very impressed with it, and have owned Avarectc, HP, Compaq, Toshiba & Sony notebooks, I usually sell them on eBay after a year or so...

I woked on a Fujitsu Lifebook the other day and fell in love with it. I want one to mount in my truck as a car PC.

Mainly because of size and the fact that it has a touch screen. It's smaller than most small form factor laptops because the optical drive and floppy are external.

For what you need it for it would be perfect, considering what you can get one for.

I know it's a YMMV thing, but I also got a great deal on a new Avertec yesterday at Sam's Club. They were closing out some of their display models and the one I got the one with the 80 gb hdd for $575. The things got a DVD+-RW drive, integrated G wifi, 4 in 1 reader, and is small as all get out.
