Smallest, fastest OS for Team projects and why to choose TA?

I've got a dozen pretty decent server class systems collecting dust. I am happy to load whatever OS is best for churning numbers in a TeamAnandtech project - whichever project is deemed most in need, mostly in terms of outcome value (like cancer research more than SETI). And the next question is - why TA? I see people mentioning power usage - how much juice can these things really use? A couple kW/hr?

Oh, and should I even bother with anything below a P2? How much HD, RAM, etc needed? Thanks.

The specifications for each project are different. I won't get into debating the relative value of each project in terms of how it benefits humanity, the TSC and D2OL are a pair of projects that are working on possible cures for a variety of diseases. Folding@Home and Distributed Folding both work on protiens and have scientific value. I know for a fact that TSC and D2OL are happy on machines that have 256 Mb ram, however with the newest client, I think they've reduced the required footprint.

As for why TA, this is the best bunch of well-informed and friendly folks that you will find anywhere on the 'net, or possibly at their homes should you go visiting, as some of these guys do! :)

You should probably figure which project(s) you'd like to run first, then you can ask more details about the specific project.
you can see the list of projects in my "AT/DC" sig.

And the next question is - why TA?
As you will soon see, TA is the friendliest, most helpful bunch around. :)

Well, I've been on the forums for 4 years (actually more, because of forum software change about that time, but that's what my profile says) and like the AT people, so I figure this is the place to use my extra CPU cycles. What about OS reqs and power?

Power kinda depends on the components used.
There are some sites that have general power draw for various components, but I can't find them right now (sorry!)

Newer CPUs usually draw more than 50W, older CPUs can draw much less. I have a "24/7" computer acting as a server and cruncher, with only a CPU, hard drive, video card and network card. It's all running happily on a 200W power supply. (actually I think it draws less than 200W but that was the power supply I had when I built it)

So, I've downloaded TSC, D2OL, and THINK. How do I be sure that TA gets credit?

Youll have to join the TeAm. Then when you check you stats it usually states in what team you are in.

EDIT: Cant be more specific coz I dont do those projects. (climateprediction.net)

Concerning your Q about why to join TA:

I use this text on one of the teams stats pages:

Team AnandTech is more than sharing your spare CPU cycles for a "worthwhile" cause.. it's about being part of a "Family." The TA "Family" is a very close knit group of people.. from all backgrounds and societies.. all working on various DC projects.
:)

I wouldn't use it if I didn't believe it.
TA is not only helping (TA and non-TA alike) in the DC-arena, but also people in desperate need in real life. That's why I'm a proud member of TA. :D

Does 98Lite improve perf of these projects, or remove critical feature(s) used?

Along the lines of power usage, does anyone know where to get some sort of meter? Something in-line or even a smaller version of the power companies thingy on outside of house?

After you log in with your user name and password there is a button " Join team" or if you have already joined a team then it will read "change team"

They would do quite well! While i do not do any of the projects you are curently involved in, best of luck!

As has been said, *why TA?*

The question should be *why not TA*

TA are the friendliest bunch of peopl ethat i have found on the net. Many give up hours of their time to help others, and as i am sure you have seen in your 4 years here there have been times int he past when a person in need in this community came here and TAers bonded together to send $$, food, clothing, supplies, and dam near anything possible. Heck some even travel long distances to help one another.

Go team go!

and welcome!

Download and install software. The install program will ask for a email address. After install the program will start. You can go to the webpage by clicking the right most button. after the webpage loads click on teams. Then register with the email and node number. You will need to give it a nick, password, and the node number. After you do this it will take you to your profile page and ask you if you want to join a team. Click yes and a list of teams will pop up ,scoll down until you see Team Anandtech then click on the team name and you will be a member of the team.
The process is the same for both tsc and d2ol

Hi BCinSC.
Great to hear that your willing to run the United Devices (Think) client!
The UD team could really use your help.

To get set up and crunch for TeAm Anandtech you should:

Download the Think client.
And then Sign up with the team! :)

That's all there is to it.
The Think client can also be run with some other DC project, so they both use 50% op your cpu cycles...

Because the UD team isn't that big, I wanted to do something that would get some more people joining us, so I created a stats page.
The link is in my sig-line. When you join the team, you'll show up in the stats and you can monitor your progress! :)

If you have any questions about the client or installation procedure, please ask!
Good luck!

THINK is a real resource hog, but running 2 jobs anyway. Went to your link, but when I click JOIN TEAM, I get a login dialog that gets me nowhere.

Is THINK the client for UD, only? I think what I downloaded was Find-A-Drug. Will get UD as well.
