So, I got my brothers new computer, and took the 9800 XT out of his and put it in mine.

Here is my current system:

Pentium 4 2.8 GHz w/ 800 MHz FSB
Corsair 3200 (DDR400) XMS w/ Heatsink (2x 256)
Radeon 9800 XT
865PE chipset on an MSI NEO-LS board(middle tier MSI NEO board)..

Here are my benchmarks

3DMark2001SE
Old benchmark w/ 9500: 11300
New benchmark w/ 9500 soft mod: 14400
New Benchmark w/ 9800 XT: 13500!?! wth

3DMark2003
Old Benchmark w/ 9500: 2300
New Benchmark w/ 9500 softmod: 4500
New Benchmark w/ 9800 XT: 3700 or so

Again, wth. I was playing BF1942 last night and I was getting a choppy screen...something isn't right...I have the latest drivers of the card.

Any idea whats going on?? I have a 450 watt power supply...plenty of airflow...the only thing I can think of is I have the fan plugged into a fan power plug and not a Harddrive or other peripheral plug...that may not be driving the fan enough which may be kicking in some type of Thermtrip on the card...

Anyone have any ideas whats going on here??

more than likely your drivers. update your mobo drivers and try some older cat's. I had probs with my 9600 pro with the 3.8s, went to 3.6 , everything is smooth

I always uninstall old drivers before installing new ones. I'll make sure to get that ATI clean sweep program that gets rid of all ATI stuff before installing and also go to either 3.6 or 3.7.

The 3.8 seems to work fine w/ a 9500np but really hoses the 9800XT.

I should go to MSI's website and see if there are any updates to the board (mostly likely there are).

Thanks for the advice guys :)

Ok, got the 3.9 Catalyst driver and got the following:

44000 on Aquamark
6335 on 3DMakr03
16939 3DMark2001

Much better performance, glad they came out with this yesterday

Yes, I have a 9800 XT, the 3.8 actually reduces the benchmarks I showed...for instance, check the top and you'll see almost a 2x drop in 3dmark2003...but, these drivers seem to do well :)
