My husband and I have a two year old son- also a cat and rabbit that live in the house and a beagle that spends most his time outside. We're looking for a small, well behaved dog to add to our household, and wondered if anyone has any suggestions as to a particular breed we should look at? We're just worried that any new addition may have some problems with a very energetic two year old boy and a very vocal cat. Any thoughts?

[. . .]

Get a CAT!!

Or a plant. They never bark!

Any kind of Terrier is going to be a barking menace. My father has three of them. They don't call them Terrors for nothing.

Get a beagle. Best small dogs on the planet.

Not a toy poodle.

Why not? Poodles of all sizes are highly intelligent dogs. Most poodles are a cakewalk to train. They make fine, fine pets.

Folks, don't let your impression of poodles -- toy, standard, whatever -- be dictated by a stereotype.

Poodles are not inherently neurotic at all, though the toy ones are often made that way by their unbelievably neurotic owners.

If you don't much cotton to the sterotypical poodle cut, guess what? You don't have to inflict it on yours.

Poodles in their natural state are the chia pets of dogs!

They are fine dogs.

Worst fucking dogs ever.

Mini Schnauzer

Pros:
Very quiet overall. Doesn't bark unless there's someone at the door. They make great guard dogs.
Very intelligent. Learns quick.
Doesn't shed.
Big enough that it won't fit in a purse (14" at the shoulders and around 17 lbs)

Cons:
Related to the terriers, so they can be stubborn. Fortunately, they're small enough to pick up or drag.

I couldn't imagine a better indoor dog than a schnauzer. Should play very well with your beagle too.

Get a Havanese (if you have the cash). My sister has one and it's an awesome dog. Small dog with big dog personality, very smart. A lot smarter than it's cousin, the Maltese. And doesn't look quite as dorky either (when kept cut short).

Picture, he just got done running on the beach for 15 minutes and was basically dead.

 Read the OP. He already has one but he leaves it outside.

I'm guessing it's left outside b/c it's not well behaved. Any new dog will be outside with him if the owner isn't going to properly train him/her.

I've seen well behaved poodles, but it sure is a crap shoot.

Find a small Lab. Black or Yellow. The perfect dog. Great with everyone including kids. Smart, easily trained and will be a best friend to your child. True they don't fit the description of a small dog but why limit yourself?

Hehe, we have one chihuahua, she's just shy of 5 pounds but she acts like she's a german shepherd. She's very protective of our property, no one even walks by without us knowing about it. And she's good with the family, though my kids are all teenagers. We're adopting her "sister" this august, same parents just 2 years younger. 🙂

But I don't think chihuahuas are good with toddlers, you may want to wait for child to be a bit older before going that route.
