uhh... don't get anything powered by atom.
and the fujitsu's keyboard will probably suck since it's floating island flat top.
i got a Dell Inspiron 14z for cheap and love it. ridiculously long battery life: 5hr watching espn3 streams, 6hr browsing with moderate flash level, 8+hr while using Office with wifi off (all times were projected by Windows and some of which I verified after a prolonged period on battery). Things that set it apart from other 14" are: outstanding battery life at a light weight, backlit keyboard option, USB 3.0, displayport, rounded edges & dock covers (some don't like this but I really do as I was looking for something similar to the rounded edges of the 1st gen macbook air).

yes, but depends on what you want it for. If you want windows you still need a netbook or lightweight laptop.

Correct, however, Windows was not on Op's requirements list. :)

my aim is
1) portability
2) battery life
3) weight
4) abilities

Well, usually abilities = windows as Android just won't cut it for many tasks. Now if they actually do release ARM tablets with Windows 8, that would be an option but that's too far away.
Anyway, op needs to specify what abilities.

Dell Latitude e6220 during one of the Outlet 25% off sales.

I just got two with the following specs for $706 after tax and shipping.

CPU: i5 2520
RAM: 4GB
Hard drive: 128GB Samsung SSD
Portable DVD Burner
3 year NBD parts warranty

Weight: 2.9 pounds with standard 3 cell battery.

Still has the same docking port that all other Latitude e5xx / e6xx have, so you can take it home and connect it to two additional displays. Same system would have a retail price of around $2000.
