Small Pic's don't display in Explorer anymore as "web page"

I normally have Explorer in Windows 98 set to display as web page style. So you there is a file list (details) in the right pain, it creates space just to the left of the file list. Normally if I highlight a JPG file, it will display a small version of that just to the left.

I installed Adobe Photoshop and all JPG files became associated with it. Uninstalled it and the association remained - probably a glitch as the registry was not updated to reflect application removal. The only way I could reassociate Internet Explorer with JPG files was to edit the registry under HKEY Classes and deleted the subkeys for JPG which were still listed as associated with the now unistalled Adobe Photoshop (yes I rebooted since then too). After I did that, the "OPEN WITH" option became available again and I could reassociate JPG with IE. OK great, now JPG files open up with IE again. But ever since this whole process, the small pictures will no longer show in Explorer. Also there is no "quick view" option under FILES in Explorer either. I even made quick view was installed. Anothering, each time I double click on a JPG file, it opens a new IE window. Before, it would keep the same IE window open and you could arrow forward or backward.

Help!

well, i'm sure this is not the direct answer to all your problems, but .....
if you want to enable the "open with ...", just use shift and right click, it will be there. you don't need to edit the registry. Also, if you want to associate a certain file extension with a certain program, you can go to windows explorer, click on tools -> options -> file types.

also, in msie, under tools -> advanced -> reuse windows for launching shortcut, you can check that box so the same ie will be used when opening the files

now, a thing you could try is to put the HKEY Classes back to the registry, and hope it will come back up.
or maybe try finding a registry fix from http://www.regedit.com/ and see if there's anything in there that can give you the image preview back to explorer

Here is the deal - after I uninstalled Adobe Photoshop deluxe, I couldn't get the "OPEN WITH" option at all, period. Normally you can right click on a file which has no association, and get the OPEN WITH option. But it was not available, probably because the registry still listed an association - which it did.

Only when I deleted that subkey did the OPEN WITH option return.

Before trying the OPEN WITH thing, I tried going to VIEW, FOLDER OPTIONS and change the association there under FILE TYPEs. So I tried all the standard things first. The registry didn't uninstall the association with Adobe PhotoDeluxe - that was probably why the problems happened.

Of course, the image preview is what I am missing now. Maybe that is because I deleted the Subkey rather than edit it?

I believe the answer to my problem is I deleted a subkey in my registery. It was recreated when I reassociated my JPG files, but there were to entries under the JPG subkey under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.JPG before and now there is only one. Could someone with a standward WIN98 setup look in there and tell be what both entries have listed?

Thanks

stndn is correct. HOLD shift and right-click on an item and 'Open
With...' will be there. As for the previews, no idea. Never had the
problems you're describing even after zapping Photoshop off my
drive.

Damascus, Thanks... but that is taken care of. I've reassociated the JPG file with IE and they now open. As originally posted, the problem is that the "thumbnail" image preview in Explorer doesnt display for jpg files when they are highlighted. The always did before.

I'm zeroing in on the fact that this is a registry problem - I deleted the registry subkey JPG under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. The subkey was receated by Windows98 when I reassociated, but there were two entries before and now only one. I think the answer lies in restoring the other entry. I'm checking my PC at work to see what it has... but it is an NT box.

In that case, exporting the key from another machine and importing it
would work I guess.

Try This. Go into explorer. Select the tools option from the menu. Then select the folder option on the bottom of the drop down menu. A box will pop up. From that box about 1/3 of the way down you should see a section listed as web view. Select the option that states "enable web content in folders". Then Click apply. Close, and open explorer again, and see if you can view the pictures in explorer.

Eraser.
