Small Network, Which Protocol?

I have two computers, W98 and NT4, on a small LAN. Which protocol would be best used for them to communicate with each other? Looking for fastest speed and I don't want TCP/IP (connected to the Internet, would rather leave certain ports closed). Thanks.

Use Netbeui, it is the fastest for small networks and the easiest to setup and it won't interfere with any IP addresses you may connect too. Also install Client for Microsoft Networks and make that your default way to log in on the Win98 machine.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure if NetBEUI had any real speed advantage over IPX/SPX. I guess since there's only two broadcasts aren't an issue, lol. All that other stuff I can do in my sleep...might make it more pleasant sometimes. ;)

IPX/SPX is usually use over Novell network. you can use the IPX/SPX as some securit measure since more heckers are hecking over tpc/ip (i think that is what my teacher said...) :D

Netbeui is always faster in small networks and peer-to-peer, since it is not routable, it doesn't have to make any routing decisions, which helps make it faster in smaller networks.
