My plan,

My Broadband connection-----------Mandrake 9.0 Firewall Server -----------Asante' 4 port Router ------- My 4 computer network

A small plan for my Dorm room, not sure if it will work yet, my other systems are running win2k and Xp and 98se and i would like to set it up as i have noted above, but im not sure if this is possible, but in any event i would like to know. And maybe some insite on what to do to go about it, i would also like to run a webserver, either on the Mandrake box or on my 2k box. any help would be appriciated.
Thanks

P.S. to clarify i have 1 Mandrake9 Linux box, 1 Windows 2000 box, 1 Windows Xp box, and 1 good ol' win98se, ya i know its pritty cramped in this little dorm.

You can ditch the asante router and use the lunix box to route/firewall/nat for your windows machines. The windows boxes will need to plug into something though, if you already own the asante router, just use it as a switch and disable all the nat/firewall abilities if it allows you to. If you were thinking of purchasing that router, just get a 4 or 8 port 100mbit switch instead.

i already own the router it was a freebie i receive from a friend, so i'll use it as a switch, any thoughts / links on how to make my linux box a really good firewall would help
thanks again

There's all kinds of Linux firewall FAQs out there just Google it.

Remember, a firewall should be a firewall and nothing else. Using a firewall as a webserver is absolutely pointless. You might as well set up a network of strings and tin cans. It would open a gaping hole in the firewall itself not to mention (heaven forbid) if an Apache vulnerability is discovered then some one could easily take complete control of your firewall.

I suppose that if im going to run any sort of webserver, i will make it completely seperate from the rest of my machines and my firewall, as it is true, a bleeding hole in my firewall would not be a good thing :-D
Thanks for the input any other insites will be greatlly appriciated!
Thanks
