Small Ebay query (with *POLL*)

Well, the summary says it all.

I am kind of new to ebay... so please advice. I dont want to be a bad trader

Here is what happened...

20 days ago :
I sold a mobile phone online (fixed price).
Buyer paid by CC.
I offered shipping insurance at extra cost but the seller refused.
I shipped the package.

Now:
The package is lost. The courier company cannot track it.
I already have his money in my bank, and have already paid ebay the selling fees.
I still have the shipping reciept proving I shipped the phone.
Buyer is pissed off...


What should I do? Who should eat the loss here?
Btw, buyer rating is +5 (100%) and my rating is +13 (100%).
 
This is why I require insurance for most Ebay sales. Usually they won't even notice that shipping cost is $2 higher so it's completely invisible to the buyer.
 
Thats a tough call, did you offer insurance? That would be the deciding factor to me. If you offered and they said no, then it's on them. If not, it's on you.

edit - this is why I automatically add insurance as well.......
 
Paypal/Ebay is still going to probably fvck you over.

Buyer should've opted for insurance. You're in the clear as long as you can prove it was shipped,

Proved something was shipped. How often is it that you ship something and they do happen to lose YOUR specific package.

If it's USPS, you can be charged with mail fraud.

Do you really want to take that risk to save a few bucks?
 
he didn't insure it. as long as you have the receipt or proof that it was shipped, you're good.

what i usually do is include insurance in the shipping price and always get insurance for the item, no matter what. covers my ass and the buyers ass whether he wants it or not.

Ebay has given me a Draft which is deposited to my bank. Paypal does not work in India...
 
Do you still have the receipt from dropping off the package? I always keep those until I get confirmation that the buyer received his package.

How much were you charging for insured delivery? It's usually like USD$2 for USD$100 worth of goods.

As long as you weren't jacking the insurance rate: buyer refused insurance = buyer is SOL.

But it doesn't prove *what* was shipped, could have been a box of rocks. The insurance on shipping is to protect the shipper not the receiver. The receiver doesn't own the package until it arrives. That's what the insurance is for, in case it doesn't arrive.

Abhi, you shouldn't offer insurance, make it mandatory. It's your protection.

edit: Folks, imagine if you will the same purchase from an online vendor, and you are the buyer. So here are a few Qs.

Are you EVER offered insurace? No. Why? Because the SELLER is already paying for it to protect thelselves.

What would you expect if you bought an item from an online vendor and didn't receive it? That's right, you'd expect another item to be shipped to you, ASAP to, right?

Being this transaction is in India, I have no idea what the laws around this are, so YMMV.

If that's the case, send him a copy of the receipt and file a lost package claim with whoever you shipped with. If he is still unhappy, oh well. He didn't opt for insurance so you are not at fault.

doesnt matter much.

He will most lilkely go to his credit card company and ask for a refund cause he paid and got nothing. I have no idea which way the credit card company will go though.
 
Cheap bastards.. Sellers should always include Insurance automatically, when shipping an item..

It should never be buyer's responsilbilty..

Would Amazon say "Tough Luck!"?



Give the full refund to buyer. Seller deals with the shipping company..

yeah but is this guy an online vendor? most likely he's just some guy trying to get rid of stuff he doesn't need.
fvck if i'm going to go out and buy another item to send to someone because the mail or shipping company screwed up.
 
For the record, the Optional Insurance I offered would have costed him the equivalent of USD 1.7 extra.

Edit: In the future, I ll raise my shipping prices by 2 bucks for mandatory insurance....
