Evening:

Is it possible to setup a power schedule for the server? I'd like it to turn on at 8:00 am and then turn off at midnight? Is this possible (either through SBS 2003 or a third party program)?

I have no need to run the server during the middle of the night (save on electricity). Thanks!

You should be able to create a task that uses the shutdown command. The command could be something like 'shutdown -s -t 0'

Turning it back on will be a problem though.

Does the bios have an option to turn it on at a specified time? If that were the case you could use Stash's suggestion to shut it down and than the bios to turn it on in the morning.

Are you really going to save that much electricity by shutting it down overnight?

I agree with spyordie007. Your not going to save all that much electricity. Use the everning hours to do backups of the servers and other jobs that you don't want running during the day.

Afternoon:

The BIOS does not have the ability to turn it back on (unless wake on lan is used). I appreciate the help Stash regarding the shutdown command. Maybe automatic shutdown would be the best. I could just manually turn it on in the mornings.

To spyordie007 and mikecel79: I know it's not going to save a lot of electricity, but it will save some. :) I am also trying to minimize noise at night. The server is for a home office network. =)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and thoughts.

Are you sure the BIOS does not have a wake up time under power saving options page? Most desktop mobos have such settings, hard to imagine a server mobo not having these..

This is true, but you have to remember that server motherboards aren't designed for "desktop-style" uses - they're designed to start up and stay up indefinitely. Thus, the likelihood of having a "timed-on" function on a server board is remote at best.
