I need to spend less than 999.99 dollars for a notebook. I prefer a small one, and I do not need power just something to carry around and type on.

I can get a new ibook 12inch G4 with 800mhz cpu and 128 meg ram for about 949 at my school.

I prefer to get a PC not a MAC but I cannot find a small PC notebook for less than 1500 let alone 1000 dollars.
Any other recommendations for a 12inch type notebook that is less than 1000 dollars?

I agree, the averatec is a great choice if you don't need battery life. I would go with the iBook if that's an important factor. Either one will do a great job.

Gateway and Dell both sell notebooks that are below 1000. As do Compaq and HP, but I don't put their level of quality at the same as Dell's.

How about the Averatec 3150H.

Specs:
1.4GHz Athlon XP-M
256mb Ram
30gb Hard drive
up to 32mb integrated S3 Savage8 video
56k + 100/10 LAN
VGA out
3* USB2.0
1*PC card slot
12.1" XGA
4.3 lbs.

I got that at Staples for $700+tax after rebates about a month ago.

Hey all thanks for the Advice.

I will prob look at some of the refurb X series by IBM. BTW How are the refurbs from IBM?

Also, there cannot be any rebates involved since it will be purchased by a grant and my school does not like to handle rebates.

I had a refurbed IBM a21m and it was very nice. It had a few things go wrong with it, but not mroe then any other laptop. And, IBM's warranty support was top-notch. I did get one with a 1 year warranty. It seems that most of IBM's refurbed warrantys are shorter now.

FWIW I just got a T40p, factory refurbished, at a steep discount ($2100 CAD off the retail price, to be exact) and it came with a 1-year warranty (same as the new TP express models).

Having said that, a blown logic board last week (after only two weeks of use) has kinda put a damper on the fun. It has proven to me, though, that like sciencewhiz says, IBM has excellent customer service. I called them, argued a little over whether I had a warranty (at the beginning they told me I didn't, but that was soon cleared up, and they were very apologetic -- the CS rep I was dealing with even sent me a personal email to find out how things are progressing), and now they are going to send me a box so that I can drop the my TP in and send it back.

Apparantly, they have quite a fast turnaround, I might get it back by Friday. I think a 5-day turnaround (from the resolution of the warranty issue) is more than acceptable, especially when you factor in shipping takes up at least 2 of those days.

Other than this newly-broken component, the laptop is pretty much perfect. I did catch 1 stuck pixel which was a dissapoinment (but, then again, one pixel or $2100?). Otherwise the machine was cosmetically flawless - no scratches, nicks or dings.

Upon re-reading this post, I guess I could be more jaded, what with the logic board failure so soon into the life of the product and the stuck pixel, but it's actually not troubling me all that much. I guess that's because after only a week of use I realized just how good a product it was. For the price, I'm willing to put up with the shortcomings.

[EDIT: I suppose I should mention that this has taught me not to buy a laptop out-of-warranty. I'm thinking about dumping this one next year and getting another one, depending on how things go (since refurbs can't have extended warranties).]

HTH!

[EDIT for clarity.]

I've had an ibook 600 for two years and the battery life is truly amazing. iBooks are great little systems, that's what I'd buy.

Maybe. I would be paid by a grant and I am not sure how much I can allocate to a notebook...
