Small 4770 (non K) Review

Any chance you can clarify, if I'm using my home system to run VMWare workstation then the 4770 is the version to buy?

I won't be OCing.
Both models support hyperthreading so there is nothing lost not going for the K.
Both support VT-x but you get VT-d with the non-K model along with TSX.

The only issue with it is the lack of support for > 32GB RAM but going SB-E is too damn expensive!

If you are not OCing, and you need VT-d, then the non-K model is perfect for you without a doubt.

I was slightly incorrect. Intel doubled the read path from L2 to L1, not L2 to CPU.

AFAIK no mention of L1-L2 *read* path on the whole IDF slide deck [1], and particularly not on the slide you're refering above
for example slide 14 mentions "2x L2 bandwidth"

given the L2 latency it may be difficult to use all the available bandwitdh so it may well be a benchmark issue, it was released a few days ago

also none of their use cases (pure load, pure store, 1:1 load:store) are real world like IMO, here again (L2$ bw) a 2:1 load:store ratio will be nice to add

it is a symmetric bidirectional path, isn't it ?
L1D load traffic may generate a lof of store traffic for all the evicted modified lines

But in the first slide is reads "Bandwidth to L1" is the only path they doubled. Whereas both the Load and Store of the L1 doubled. Maybe I am misunderstanding it.
 
Edrick, looking forward to your TSX benchmarks to decide if the K chip is for me.

In general, is there a benefit in getting a i7-4770 vs a i5-4670 if the main use is for discrete card gaming with occasional encoding of movies?

well, on a second thought I agree it can be understood like that, I was maybe mislead by slide 14 and overlooked this at slide 15?

anyway I'm asking for 2:1 load:store, here it is

I do not encode movies much, but I am almost certain that encoding software can take advantage of the HT 8 threads of the 4770. Gaming not so much.
 
Edrick if it's not too much of a hassle could you run AIDA64 under safe mode? I know for a fact that any amount of background activity can influence them in a major way, alternatively you could run the score a few times & pick the best of the lot in normal mode.
 
Sure, I will try to do that tonight if I have time. But I do close down just about everything when I run these.

And because of the way Intel have semi-gimped their K version I think a lot more people WILL be interested in the non-K version chips. I know if I was buying now I'd be thinking a lot longer and harder about it than I would have for sandy and ivy. Especially with the seemingly slightly longer odds in the OC ability lottery.
 
I can get my i7-4770 up to 107MHz in its BCLK speed just fine with out any heat issue with a aftermarket cooler it is a air cooler but it is a very good one
