okay today i found my old copy of alpha centauri and alien crossfire that i had bought for my Powermac G4 back in 2000. i went to ebay to see whether they're worth selling, and to my surprise, sellers are asking over $100 for smac mac version and alien crossfire i couldn't find any for mac but on the PC side were selling around $60 (mac version is probably more).

what's the deal with these games? are they so ultra-rare that they go for so much on ebay? i'll probably sell these separately, i just couldn't believe how much they are being sold at.

I just bought SMAC for Windows about a couple of months ago off of Amazon.com for 15 bucks. What a great game too.

yes but the reason it's so expensive is because it's a mac version and they never made that many.

I don't know about SMAC, but Alien Crossfire was always fairly rare and can go for a lot on ebay.

SMAC was just as addicting as CivII for me, plus you can use direct IP for multi-player. That was just awesome.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack: my #1 wish for GoG.com.
I haven't cared about Civilization games but AC really sounds like fun. Never got to play it.

GalCiv 2 is probably the closest game out to SMAC, and even that is far different. SMAC has little similarity to Civilization, it is far more modular, although I haven't played it in years so I may be remembering it incorrectly.

It's pretty damn similiar actually; It was meant as a civ 3, but they didn't have rights to the name at the time so they made it in space. Civ with fungus and customizable units. I still think it's the best civ game though.

Yes. I loved SMAC + XFIRE. It is very much a sequel since they have the whole square grid, cities, 3 types of things on squares for food/prod/economy and pretty much everything else. Most of the difference was in the social policies, which is included in the newer civs. The ability to basically customize any unit was great.

Growing forests/fungus everywhere was hilarious since it's completely anti regular civ.

Forests were so OP. Rush to get access to the two improvements that increase their output and make all your tiles forests = easy win.

SMAC is one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, it's where I got my username from.
