Can the developers be bothered enough even with S.M 2.0? Thats because today's and next gen standards are S.M3.0.
The question is the fall back shaders. S.M1.1? or S.M2.0. or even no fall back shader (in the extreme case).
We all know S.M1.1 looks a lot different to S.M2.0 or 3.0, because its IQ is poor comapred to the higher S.M.
Its could really hurt ATi, becasue if those fall back shaders on the games turn out to be 1.1, performance wouldnt be a problem but the IQ would be really bad. This is the point, how will these newly released Xfire products play newer gamers, with features?
I tend to agree. It costs money to develop lots of rendering paths hence developers are going to want to code an SM3 path for those with the kit to play the game properly and one other fallback which has to cover as much of the market as possible to maximise sales. That's likely to be SM1.1 or SM2 but highly unlikely to be SM2b. SM2b doesn't bring you many more sales, for that you need to support all the FX and 9X00 cards. SM2 is possible, but the problem is that all the FX series video cards will run it like dogs, but you can't afford to ignore them as it's a huge percentage of the market. Hence SM1.1 is a distinct possibility.
