Slysoft AnyDVD subscription change

Got this email yesterday, thought I'd share in case anyone was thinking about buying the software package.

Dear valued customer,

As of January 1st, 2009, Slysoft will change its update policy from free
lifetime updates to an annual subscription fee. All license purchases
made before January 1st, 2009 will not be affected by this change; as
promised, all licenses purchased before 2009 will still be honoured
under Slysoft's free lifetime update policy.

SlySoft announces this step in advance in order to provide its customers
with the choice between the old and new licensing model. Buyers who act
quickly can get an additional discount with the current ongoing special
promotion.

Until Wednesday, December 31 2008 Slysoft offers a 20% discount on all
software products--except upgrades. If you are entertaining the thought
of purchasing one of Slysoft's products, now is the right time to act!

Happy Holidays!

I'll admit it, when I got a blu ray drive I pirated the software to watch BR's and HDDVD's on my non-HDMI monitor. The only thing is that it you needs an update each week to watch the newest releases, and finding the newest release when you have your new shiny blu ray disc in your hand was maddening.

Ended up buying it and have no regrets. Excellent software and works as it should and makes perfect images of both BRs, HDDVDs, and regular DVDs so that you can just mount and watch.

Overpriced?! Do you fully understand what AnyDVD does? If anything, it's dramatically underpriced.. it's not like there's an alternative anywhere in the realm of what AnyDVD provides..

Slysoft has been hiking their prices like crazy in the past few years. First it was the dollar to Euro transition, now it's this subscription fee business. The dollar-to-Euro transition is what inspired me to buy it, which apparently turned out to be a very smart move.

OTOH, the other posters are correct: the software is extremely unique, and it is _very_ well supported. So saying it's a bad value is a little difficult.

My problem with anydvd is while it is good, it is not great.
Great would be an "all in one" approach like DVDfab is towards standard dvd processing.
Me... I wanted to rip BR to a pc file playable with powerdvd on my HTPC.
Anydvd could rip to a file, but the ability to select your audio format is missing.
All or most my BR rips played in French.
It was either learn French, or skip anydvd.

Yes there are work arounds, a lot of pain in the "A" 3rd party apps to change audio,
or use a virtual drive to load-play the rip, but that is my point.
No simple effective process to simply rip to a file with full control over the audio.

With BR I suspect we will see many new rippers coming down the tubes that
can out perform anydvd hands down. Something more like dvdfab is for standard dvd.

Im glad I did not pay for anydvd to find out the downfalls.
sacre bleu!!!

Which option are you using to rip? Rip to Image or Rip Video DVD to hard disk? Rip to image will make exact 1:1 copies of your dvd/hddvd/BR, so there are no issues there. I've never actually used the Rip Video DVD to hard disk option, but if that's how it goes then you might wanna post about it in the forums.

First of all, if you're using AnyDVD to rip your movies.. Vous le faites faux.

I will agree with you on one one thing though, yes, there will likely be a slew of Blu-ray ripping applications coming soon. However, you'll still be using AnyDVD.. to, y'know, strip the copy protection and all so those new fancy rippers can do their job.

 made my day

Yeap I was ripping my tiny BR collection to my HTPC as a file.
And used powerdvd HD to play them files.
That all works very nice. But about half my
BR's rip in French, not ENG.

I know ENG is there cause another program called totalmediatheater
plays the ENG audio, while powerdvd plays only the French.

But totalmediatheater is a trial demo and the makers do not upkeep
their program like the powerdvd people do.
If I remember, totalmediatheater (which is a HD BR file/disc player)
will not play my kung fu panda, or some other newer BR's.
Totalmediatheater would be my choice if they kept it up to date.

And DVDfab does not support BR ripping.
So till then I'll just keep running the actual BR disc.
At least powerdvd HD does that and has language selection options.

PS. As my BR collection expands I know it will be silly to keep all those huge BR files on the HTPC hard drive for easy access. So at some point I will have to play the actual disc anyway.
