Sluggish performence

i never installed a any jmicron software.

To clarify the hdd which is SATA seems to not be the problem, its the IDE dvdrw drive and dvd drive, as soon as anything is put into it one of my cores goes up to 100% usage and the other one goes to 20% usage.

In your Device Manager, do your DVD drives show up as SCSI? Before I uninstalled the software that was on my PC, it had my drive's ID string followed by SCSI.

The Jmicron software comes up on Windows Update, only reason I suggested you might have it on your PC.

Edit: In Device Manager, check the SCSI and RAID controllers. Is it a generic ID or is it the Jmicron? If its the JMicron, I'd suggest trying to uninstall it then letting XP install a generic controller.

When i check properties for both my disk drives, and i go to details, it starts off with IDE....... so im guessing its in ide mode.

As well maybe im blind or something but i cannot for the life of me see SCSI and RAID controller(s) listed anywhere in device manager.

I've read about the Jmicron controller over at XS a little while ago, it does seem to be the culprit.

At the end of my ID string for my DVD burner it has SCSI. This might've been an isolated case of it being in the string, but the Jmicron controller is falsely recognizing your drive as a SCSI. It caused random disc spinning which completely froze my mouse for up to seven seconds and caused popping through my soundcard. I thought it was instability due to my overclocking, yet when I hit stock timings it remained.

You have to have an SCSI and RAID controller in your Device Manager or your drives would not be able to be recognized through the MOBO. Here's a screen of where mine is at:

It took me forever to figure out what was causing the problem. I knew after checking my Device Manager and seeing that the drive was being recognized as SCSI that it was either my firmware or the controller. After updating my firmware and the problem remaining, I knew it was the controller itself.

This seems to be a real problem with the current ASUS boards using the Jmicron controller. I'm just trying to spread the information because I'm sure thousands of users are bound to have this problem, and its quite a serious one in regards to performance.

Wow. Sorry I doubted you. That's really weird. Do you have the controller enabled in BIOS?

This is a "stab in the dark" kind of deal, but maybe you could install the Jmicron software thats on your MOBO disc and then uninstall it after the reboot. Then let XP install the generic drivers. If that doesn't work, I'm sorry, but the problem will just be out of my league, to be honest.

Yeah i checked my bios and it says the scsi controller is enabled.

I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable members could figure this out. I'm sorry I couldn't help you, I was just going by how I fixed the same issue on my P5B board. I'm not familiar with your board's BIOS, but is your controller setup for IDE instead of RAID? Do you have the most recent BIOS?

Ok i installed the raid controller........ and uninstalled it, and then reinstalled it again from microsoft update, still........ same thing.

I have the most recent bios update, ill check out whether its set up as ide or raid...... wish me luck.

I have that same seagate hard drive. I noticed the jumpers, so I looked at seagate's website. It says those jumpers don't need to be moved for correct operation, and that they are for factory use only

I stumbled across that page too. Unfortunately, the information on it is outdated. Check out the 7200.10 manual:

...specifically section 3.2. I can confirm that removing the jumper does substantially improve the drive's performance.

This is honestly the most idiotic problem i have ever encountered...... I just ran 2 instances of prime 95 and @ 100% load for both cpus everything was still smooth...... yet a damn disk drive turns this thing into a damn turtle.


Anyone think a format would somehow solve the problem?

I'd say its worth a shot. You've exhausted all other options, really. Since its a new system you wouldn't really be losing anything other than time. Good luck.

You might check/change which controller your drive is plugged into. From what I remember, the P5W DH uses a kind of screwy disk controller setup, where they borrow a single channel from the ICH7R controller to split into the two channels fronted by the SiL controller with its "EzRaid" feature. So if you're on one of the SiL ports, you might try instead switching to one of the ports directly connected to the ICH7R, or if you're already on one of the ICH7R ports, you can try the one internal Jmicron port. If the perfomance problem persists no matter which controller the drive is installed on, then probably there's a problem either with the HDD or the optical drive (do you have alternates for each that you can test with?).

Ok ive concluded that my power supply that i had previously was not bad, infact its my damn house.......... i just bought a brand new silverstone and the same thing happens with this one that happened with my enermax liberty.

Anyone have any ideas as to why that is happening? i mean this is brand new townhouse.

Now i try to format.

Too much load on a single circuit? Would be my guess anyways, although I remember seeing some article or post somewhere recently about how newer circuits are being built to include extra devices that will break the circuit during moments of instantaneous high loads/rapid load fluctuation, similar to what happens when a high-end PC is turned on. Perhaps your townhouse has this sort of thing installed, or perhaps you just have too many things running on a single breaker circuit. You could try plugging it in in a different room to see if that makes a difference.

Did you install this system from scratch or did you maybe ghost your last machine and restore the image to your new one? I would not recommend this with windows if thats what you did. I would recommend a a fresh install. I guess if i were you i would just format the drive and start a fresh install paying close attention to how the system responds. With no drivers other than windows drivers and video drivers from nvidia do you have this problem? THen i would go from there.

Tried a different room that has NOTHING plugged into any sockets and same damn thing........... this is just unbelieveable.

In addition the second IDE connector on my mother board recognizes absolutely nothing, so basically im stuck with one that doesnt work and one that makes my computer crawl to a snails pace.

So now i hate an enermax liberty 500w that is good, a silverstone strider 600w modular , and an ocz modstream 450 that wont reach my motherboard connections if placed inside my p180.

Ok well should i RMA this damn motherboard? Because nothing so far has solved this problem.
