Wow, a lot more expensive. Are there any other places that rent lenses by mail? I have called a few camera shops locally and no one knows of a place locally.

that's odd. Both of the big camera stores that I know in my area rent lenses. That said, they only rent a small handful of Canon Ls, and similar high-end lenses for other mounts.

That said, there are *some* options between the cheapo "consumer" lenses and high-end "L" type glass. As has already been said, some of the Sigma lenses are pretty good, as are some from Tamron and Tokina. There are even a couple of mid-range lenses from Canon itself - I just picked up a 70-300 USM IS, and am looking at the 17-85 IS, as well.
