Please, try to talk to some other vets to see what, any options you have before putting him to sleep. I'm sure you will find someone who has seen something similar enough to what's going on with him that they think some treatment is worth trying. At the very least an x-ray might tell something and a pet x-ray is not very expensive. We can help you with at least $1100 now, I don't know if anyone can get you more but have you asked your friends and family to see if they can give you any money for this?

I would echo other's sentiments in checking with any of the local veterinary schools. My wife has recently gone back to vet school to get her degree in internal veterinary medicine and they operate a clinic out of the school where you can get reduced fees in some circumstances.

It's a tough choice to make. One of our cats was diagnosed with cancer and start to finish between diagnosis and treatment cost about $10,000. Surprisingly the diagnostics are the heavy cost and actual treatment is not nearly as expensive. Cats also do not endure the sort of misery humans do when undergoing chemotherapy.

If you can't find a solution I'd recommend doing your best to help ease your cats pain but put its well-being ahead of your emotional need to hang on. We lost a cat to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart enlargement) a few years ago and made what I feel was the right choice to have him put down rather than experience a very short life of complications from blood clots leading to inevitable death.

Yes you can. In fact, you have an obligation to do so. Just because your broke does not mean your little buddy has to suffer. A shovel is cheap and gets the job done.

In most places this would be defined as animal cruelty and criminal. Euthanasia is not expensive. Most believe they can just shoot their pet to, this often is not true because 1) discharge of a firearm is usually illegal in residential areas and 2) again in many places you cannot kill your own pets nor bury them on your property especially in areas where well water is common.

I respect veterinarians. They provide repair service and preventative maintanance for the luxury category of pets.

Having a pet is one of the defining aspects of our species. It makes a profound statement to an uncaring world that says I as an individual excell at living to such an extent that I have surplus food, water and shelter. My surplus is so large that I can spend it on lower life forms to impress my peers, attract mates and entertain myself. After all it would be silly to spend the surplus helping others of my own species in need.

Do you hate car mechanics?

Sorry to hear. :(

If there really is no hope I would get the cat put to sleep, but that alone can be a very tough decision. I've had my cat for about 10 years now, I sometimes take it for granted that she's still healthy other for her constant puking, but that's been happening since she was a kitten and no vet knows why.

That's a sort of insane outlook on pet ownership.

I want to thank everyone for offering to help, from the bottom of my heart it means the world to me. Looking at my cat Rocky today, his breathing is very shallow, and his eyes are wide open, he has not slept in days. He will not get off his side, and he just prefers to lay alone. I slept beside him on the floor all last night thinking about what needs to be done next. I think I have made the call to euthanize him and put him to rest, I can no longer sit here and watch him suffer its breaking my heart. Its just sad, hes only 7 years old and still had much longer to go, and now hes being taken away from me so early. I am heading out now to get it over with, thank you everyone for your support.

It's hard to deal with, I've had a couple that were 18 years old I've had to have put down and cried some of the few times in my life both times.

We also have one that is currently 10 years old that the vet asked if we wanted to put down when he was young, like 1 year old we spent a couple grand on, and he's doing great.

My wife nursed him a lot and the Vet had him a couple weeks prior to that helping him recover.

The Vet still calls him The Miracle Cat, and the women in the office go crazy over him whenever he comes in for a check up.

That's off topic, sorry man, I've been there myself before.

It hurts like hell, but sometimes they are better off passing along.

My cat impresses no one except me and as yet has not attracted a single mate for me, I'll have to get on him about that though.

He does entertain me and him self though. When he he feels like it.

sounds like your cat ate some rat poison. I'm no expert.

Sorry for your loss.

The highlighted is part of what is slowly convincing me that you have a borderline personality disorder, and therefore are slyly trolling the OP here in the very worst, the ugliest way. If none of this is true, then you are bred in the bone stupid with your "unintentional" callousness.

I'm vacationing you for a week. Think things over, and don't cross this damn line ever again here.

Well I am back from the vet everyone. This has to be one of the most heart breaking moments of my life, it was hard to hold back the tears. I am having him cremated, but will not be holding on to the ashes, its just to much for me to bare. Thank you once again to everyone for their concern and help it means so much to me. His suffering is over, he went peacefully, but on the ride over I noticed his mouth was sagging and he had started to cry out every few minutes. R.I.P Rocky 8/7/2014

cats are sensitive topic here. TFP got permabanned because of it.

Don't be an asshole to animals and you won't get permbanned.

I can't believe that gerbil necro today had Eli constantly stating to stomp on it or worse.

$4 pet, free pet or $20,000 pet; they all deserve a level of care. The cost of entry for many things is much less than the support costs.

I know exophase made a nice offer, I don't have much right now with my whole life issues, but I can put up $20 if it helps you for whatever it cost.

We have all been there, where the money to get things we need done just wasn't there. It's easy for asshats online to just tell you 'figure it out!', but reality is reality.

I wholeheartedly appreciate the offer, you and everyone else that have shown their sincerity will never be forgotten by me. I however will be fine, and will manage on my own. People like you are hard to come by, and I hope and wish for nothing but good things to happen to you. If karma exist in any way or form, I hope during your times of need everyone extends their arm towards you. Thank you.

I went to a few vets, they told me it would take 2.5-5k just to run diagnostics. After that point, finding out whether or not we can save him is a different story, on top of that they did not tell me the cost of treatment. I was forced to put him down unfortunately, thankfully his suffering is over. But I thank you for everything.

Sorry for your loss. :(

Later on once this has sunk in go see cats at the shelter and adopt one. You can't replace a cat but it will at least help fill the hole and save a cat at same time.
