my cpu fan runs at 2500rpm and the temp peaks at about 47-48 C. would it be ok to slow the fan down a bit (to reduce noise) and what would be a good way of doing this?
you could screw with the voltages, but it's a pain to do.
get a Zalman FANMATE. it's a little controller that you can add on to your existing fan.
about $5 and it works.
if yu want to spend more get a fan speed controller that sits in a 5" drive bay, then you can hookup and control all your fans for the price of 4 fanmates. plus, u dont have to open the damned case to do it. i even did my psu fans
as long as your cpu cooler is decent u can slow the fan and still be in acceptable heat range.
Put a couple diodes in series with the fans power. That'll drop it down to 10.6v which will probably get you to around 2000 rpm which I've found is the threshold after which fans start to get noisy.
