Slower Performance with 7850 from 9800GTX+

I recently replaced my 9800GTX+ 514mb with an XFX Radeon 7850 1GB graphics card and noticed that the performance and FPS are noticeably lower in the game I play which is BF2 Project Reality. I also scored lower on a couple benchmarks, Aquamark3 and PassMark Performance Test 8. I know they are old school but are the only saved benchmark results I could find for the 9800GTX+ card which died.

For BF2 PR I'm using the same in game settings as I had with the 9800GTX+ which are 1280x1024 All settings maxed. It is still playable with the 7850 but noticeably more sluggish at times as the FPS will dip to 27-29 FPS occasionally in high intensity battles where as the 9800GTX+ would rarely go under 40 FPS. Overall all I would say the new card averages about 10-12 FPS lower. The Aquamark 3 scores are about 12% lower with the new card and the PassMark scores are about 15% lower.

I have done proper uninstalls/install of all drivers(latest from AMD site) and used MSI Afterburner to disable the power saver feature of the 7850 to ensure proper clock speeds. My system is a Core 2 duo E8400 @ 3.4Ghz / Gigabyte P43 Motherboard, 4GB Corsair XMS ddr2, 500GB SATA II, Creative Xfi sound card, Windows XP Pro 32bit sp3.

I am wondering if this slower performance is normal for a system like mine with newer generation cards?

It's possible both gpus are cpu limited and the 7850 simply requires more calls and thus more overhead than your 9800.

Mine was running PCIe 1.1 x1 for awhile which tanked my scores...

Look around, maybe something "isn't right".

I had same problem when my 9800gtx+ died, replaced with an 6770, supposedly better, but performed poor, like sluggish. Then after a clean install, it was smooth as butter, and faster. I dont know what kind of garbage nvidia drivers make to computer, but its a common problem when you switch to AMD.

The wheels on the bus go round and round.

Comments like that one only serve to start flame wars. Problems can be had from either vendor. In fact I typically thing that Nvidia's drivers are usually better but am getting frustrated with my Titan today.

Do you remember what you had to do to get a clean install? The process I followed was uninstall nvidia drivers from windows control panel(add/remove programs), reboot into safe mode and run driversweeper, then installed new ATI card and download/install new driver from AMD website.
