Slow XP Boot

Hello,

I have an XP Pro, running on a Shuttle AN35N Ultra and Athlon XP 2200+.

A friend with almost the same system config (different mobo but same chipset, and Athlon XP 2500+).

Boots with only about 2-3 passes of the Blue boot up bar (Average boot up time of >20sec)

My system takes about 15-20 passes of the Blue Bar (Average boot of 60-70 sec)

I would to know what is causing this and how to fix it.

Have you used Bootvis ? Also, can you reinstall windows >

bootvis = complete sh!t

i had this problem when i had a jumper configured wrong on an ide device. See if that solves your problem

delete the contents of your windows\prefetch folder. Your next boot will be incredibly fast and then it will settle down to a more normal but noticeably improved boot after a few times.

Hey thanks for the info,

I just reinstalled windows about two weeks ago so thats not the problem (i don't think).

Anyway where can i get "bootvis".

I don't think its a jumper setting, all my drives are set to Cable Select.

I downloaded BootVis and scaned my boot.

I can't get the Driver Delay Section to work.

Any help on this issue would be much apreciated.

Hey, what is the windows/prefetch folder for? And how does it make the boot process faster? Can anything go wrong deleting its contents?

Different bus speeds, ram speeds, HDD speeds and cmos setup can cause quite a difference between two systems with the same CPU. though the time difference is dramatic, I'd check my FSB speeds or try the clear the prefetch dir. You could just move the contents to a different folder or compress them into a zip or rar which doesn't delete them but fakes the system into thinking they are deleted since they aren't in the prefetch directory anymore. good luck either way

what does the prefetch do, and what is the advantage of zipping them rather then deleting them? can win still read/use them within the zip folder?

How to disable prefetch

I clear my prefetch every once in awhile when my system feels sluggish and it works for me. I use X-Setup which can clear the prefetch etc...

Hey guys i did the Prefetch thing and my system worked great.

Recently i turned it back on to test sometihng and now it hangs at the "Loading Your Personal Settings" Screen.

I turned prefetch back off, but to no avail. Still slow as snails Bootup.

I was wondering how to fix this.
