Ok. not long ago I upgraded my NIS2003 to NIS2005, and now my pc has an incredibly slow boot up time, it's speed is normal until it reaches the desktop and then will sit idle for about 2 minutes before it will load the taskbar, will it is idle i can't do anything but sit an watch..all i get is an hourglass and if i hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and look up the system processes, all sit a 0% except the system idle which sits a 99%.
I have tryed unstalling NIS2005 but this did not work and I have tryed system restore and this fail too.. I have had this problem before awhile ago and had to reformat, but I don't want to do that now as I am far to lazy to reinstall everything...any ideas?
I'm using WINXP PRO SP1

What's NIS? Norton Internet Security?
Might want to scan your hard drive. My machine started taking almost 5 minutes to boot up when it would normally take about 1 minute. From what I read, it tends to be a sign of pending failure. Check your system event log. Mine had a bunch of errors stating something about HardDisk0 has a bad block or cluster.

yeah it's Norton, I have had this problem in the past and a reformat always fixed the problem, but now I have over 300gb's of data and don't really want to reformat...there must be another way of fixing it

I tried that and it helped heaps but there is still a pause while the taskbar loads usually 30 seconds now, but it always used to load as soon as the desktop appeared when i had NIS2003

You must have a program or a service starting in your registry causing that slow load of the task bar. Do you know how to look in regedit to find that?

no i don't, i don't tend to muck around with the registry other than using the coolbits tweak for GF cards

format n00b. Formating your HD is something real geeks do on a regular basis. It fixes random problems and overall improves performance. In addition, STOP USING n00bie NORTON, MCAFEE, ETC.... Software!

I have encountered this problem before when installing SP2 on certain setups, it will take forever to load the taskbar...I have a sneeking suspision that it may be related to the network settings as it always occurs before the network icon loads, it will load the easytune4,logitech mouse and ATI icons fine then stalls..then the windows sound plays then a bit of floppy drive activity occurs then the network icon loads followed by the rest in quick succession after.
normally i would format the drive as it has been almost a year since it was last done but i have over 300gbs of data that will be a pain in the ass to back up.
other than this boot problem everything else runs smooth and fast, TuneXP helps a little bit with program load speed.

Get rid of Norton and your problem will be solved. It sounds like it is stalling at the network connection because Norton is trying to do some voodoo to make sure its running before the connection comes up.

Last year I helped a friend build a machine. It was lightning fast on a bootup. About a week later he installed some Norton software (Systemworks iirc) and it put a huge dent in the system performance.

It ran fine with NIS2003, and I have other XP machines that run NIS2005 and they all work fine, the only other thing I can think off is maybe NIS2005 needs SP2 to run properly as all my other XP machines has SP2 except this one

After much mucking around today with installing SP2 and it's updates, the problem seems to have dissappeared and my taskbar boot speed seems to have improved quite a bit to a round 5 seconds to load the taskbar, even all the icons appear correctly now instead of once in a blue moon...my conclusion NIS2005 needs SP2 to function correctly
