Slow Windows Boot-Up

When my laptop boots Windows XP Pro it takes forever to get past the first initial boot screen. The status bar keeps going and going. After the computer fully boots everything works with out any problems.

I wanted to see you have any suggestions on what steps I might take to correct this problem.

Did you run a good defragmenting program? If you have money, most people recommend PerfectDisk, but I've had bad experiences with that (it made my boot times even slower). Most, however, report it speeds everything up. I've had the best luck with Diskeeper as far as speed up my boot time. You can try both out...if you're worried about running into the situation I did, try Diskeeper first.

If you're looking for a really good free defragmenter, JkDefrag is great. I think it does a better job than anything else out there. You can get a GUI version of it if you google JkDefragGUI.

its more likely just a slow drive loading a ton of sh*t.

Take a look at what is being loaded at startup and do you need it.

Many apps will attempt to have themselves readily available or have a startup running in the background.

If you do not need them, remove them from the startup sequence.

Some will install themselves for startup even if you do not request it.

Use ccleaner or msconfig to check out your startup items and disable anything you KNOW you don't need, if it's questionable or you can't tell what it is without a google search or two leave it alone.

Duh, I can't believe I forgot to mention startup items. Disable as many as possible in msconfig (you can just open them when you need them). Do that, maybe run CCleaner, clean out files, programs, etc on your computer, check for viruses and spyware (just in case). Do that and then defragment.

I also think Diskkeeper works well for defragging. It runs automatically in the background when you tell it too. I also recently used a neat utility called "the Ultimate Troubleshooter". It analyzes all running processes and startup items and gives you a useful description and recommendation about whether the item should be or can be shut off or not. I now load about half of the startup stuff I was used to, my machine speeded up and I haven't missed any of it. It's not free but worth the small fee IMO.
