Mafia - 3 CDs - 20 mins to install - 1.85 GB
Farcry - 1 DVD - 5 mins - 3 GB
Doom3 - 3 CDs - 8.5 mins - 1.45 GB
Thief: DS - 1 DVD - 3:20mins - 2.16 GB
Unreal 2 - 3 CDs - 6 mins - 2.02 GB
UT2K4 - 1 DVD - 6mins - 5.2 GB
NFS Underground - 2 CDs - 6 mins - 1.24 GB
Deus Ex:IW - 1 DVD - 4:25 mins - 2.9 GB
BF1942 - 2 CDs - 4 mins - 935 MB

the DVDs seem to be pretty equivalent to another in time, but the CDs vary in large amounts, check out the time for Mafia. Is it just a bad installer, or are DVD drives not so good for CDs, or is it dying maybe?
It doesn't make any strange sounds like I heard on my old CD-RW before it died. Any suggestions?

Judging by the time you provided I would also agree with Fern that Mafia is an exception. I have never had any problems with a DVD drive reading a CD slower or less accurately than a regular old CD-ROM.

Some games have install speed limits set up. Look at C&C Red Alert 2. Someone's FX55 computer will install the game no faster then someone's 500Mhz K6-2 system.
