Slow transfer rate in Network

Hi, I finally got my network connection to work, but there's just one problem, the transfer rate is incredibly slow. I tried moving one mp3 to another and it takes appoximately 3 minutes! A 500 meg video file takes like 5 hours! Anyways, I was just wondering what could be wrong... I'm using Windows XP Pro and Windows ME. Recently, the Windows ME computer received the files normally (extremely fast) but when the XP computer tries to get some files, it takes forever? Got any idea what could be wrong and in which computer also. Thanks a lot!

Also I forgot to mention this. Both computer use dialup and I've tried the network with a router and also crossover cable (belkin cat5) with the same results...slow transfers.

check the cables are there homemade? What network cards are you using what is the network setup. More info is needed to really help you

Sorry I'm not too techy on computers... The cable is a brand new cat 5e crossover from belkin and the router is a cheap one, "SMC EZ Hub 10/100". My network card is "Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection" for the XP, i'm not sure how to check for windows me, but i think it's 3Com something... sorry i can't be more specific. i clicked configure on the xp network card and it shows that the duplex speed is auto-detect... is that what you wanted? also, for the network setup wizard, i choose "this computer connects to the internet directly or through a network hub. other computers connect directly or through a network hub." is that right?

tell me if you need more info, and if possible where to find it... thanks.

Can you describe how you have the computers connected. You talk about having a crossover cable and a router/hub. Well first of all If you do have a hub a crossover cable should not be in the mix. Second of all a router and a hub are different things and there is no such thing as a 10/100 hub that I know of. I was under the impression that you have to have a switch to get 100mb speed.

i was using a crossover cable first for the network connection and it was going slow... then my brother came home from school and he had a router/hub (frankly i don't know which), and i disconnected the crossover cable, and tried the router/hub and it still went slow. i just put 1 ethernet cables from my cpu to the router/hub and 1 ethernet cable from my borthers cpu to the router/hub. i hope that clears it up.

Assuming both PC's have 2 nics installed, you can connect them both with the crossover cable directly (bypassing the router).

If this is correct, what nics are you using? Are they 10/100 or just 10?

What protocol are you using? TCP IP or Netbuie?

This setup using TCP/IP should work fine. i
