Slow Startup

Yesterday, after removing some of my installed applications, I noticed some changes to my computer. First of all, when loading Windows XP, it would ALWAYS perform a check on my second hard disk, no matter if the computer is properly shut down or not. The other (more serious) problem is that it takes a lot of time (3 minutes) from logon to displaying windows explorer. Before I modified my system, Windows Explorer would instantly appear after logon.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

There's a Microsoft utility (can't find it on their website anymore though) called bootvis which gives you an overview of what's happening during the bootup process - you could google this and give it a try?

Sadly, that didn't help. I've also noticed something else: When logging on, Windows now always displays "Applying your personal settings" instead of "Loading your personal settings" even though no settings have been changed.

What do you mean it didn't help? Did you actually use it?

It will tell exactly what is going on during bootup, and point to any hangs in the system.

When I used it last, I found that several startup programs were hanging, and the dipsh*t WinBlows kept retrying every second. I can now reboot in under 30 seconds.

Show us a screencap of the graph you got when you used bootvis.

Maybe you need to clean the resistry---something like regs seeker is scarily agressive---but its free and has always worked for me with no errors. Just remember to check scan for old exe's.

It automatically backs up the registry.

As you can see in this example, I booted in 35.27 seconds. It's not 30 seconds as mentioned earlier because I have inserted a hardware gaming profile that requires a 5-second delay to choose that profile before automatically loading my default h/w profile. I have successfully chosen which drivers load before boot completion, and which ones can wait until needed by other services and processes. Most processes do not load until after boot completion.

Oh, I just tried optimizing my system with bootvis (which didn't help). I've noticed that the graph hangs after the nVidia Network Access Manager loads, and then there's a 20 sec pause after initialization of each windows process (wmiprvse.exe, wuauclt.exe, wscntfy.exe, rundll32.exe) and then continues loading other processes normally. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Another observation: Leaving the PC on the startup screen for about a minute would lead to explorer starting up properly. Any help?
