Slow Seagates

I recently ste up a RAID 0 using SOYO Dragon K7 Motherboard, AMD 1.33 GHz Athalon, 256 MB DDR and so on.... after creating the aray, fdisk and format take forever with the 2, 20 gig seagate baracuda HDs. What could be the problem here? It took like two and a bit hours to complete the format... it felt unusually slow.
Is this normal for Seagate drves?

A clean format will take that long on a large hard drive. The larger the drive, the longer it takes to format. There are utilities that will do quick formats for you.
 
You made a poor choice when you paired up 'cudas in RAID 0. I've seen many people on storage review complain that the drives are sloooow when under RAID. Dunno why, it's just that way. On the other hand, I've heard nothing but great things about IBM GXP60 in RAID 0.
 
Do you think that a normal format (performed through a normal windows bootdisk) on a 40 gig HD should take that long? My buddy has the same set up, only with two 40 gig Maxtor HDs, and his is take considerably less time to format. I think that it is wierd don't you? Also, have you ever heard anything bad about Segate Baracuda drives?
 
I noticed this immediately with my first barracuda IV
I timed it - took way longer than IBM 60GXP
(But IBM has "virtual sectoring")

So when I get ready to format a Seagate, I just co-ordinate it my appointment at the message parlor.
