Hi. Quick question. When I run a 3d application in the background, such as a game, then I alt tab out of it back to windows, dragging windows and scrolling in the web browser becomes very slow.

Does anyone know of a way to fix this?

Hasn't anyone else had this problem? Like if you run a game, then alt tab to web browse, then the scrolling is real slow. Im thinking this is a card specific problem, as my friend's x700pro does not have this problem.

Does anyone know of a registry hack to fix this, or a program, or anything at all?

I've had this problem when there were corrupt or conflicting drivers with the particular card installed. That's the only time. Maybe try a fresh install of the latest catalyst or omega drivers. I'm not positive though...

well depending on your CPU you're putting a hell of a load on it doing that :p
a x700 pro is very similar in performance to a 9800 AFAIK, so what CPU's do you both have?

i don't know why you'd bother doing that ne way ;)

Me and my friend have the exact same cpu, so I am certain it is a video card issue. I have had this issue no matter what drivers I use or how many times I reinstall. Does anyone know of a program that can fix it or maybe a driver setting I have overlooked?

give them a spin and let us know if it helps?

i have always had that happen with my 9800 pro/xp2600+/gb Ram/A7V8X, but always assumed it was the CPU choking so if you can fix it i'd love to know :)

I have that problem with my 9800Pro, but I think it is because of my RAM

I don't know about you guys but I think my problem is because of the driver. It only happens when I have a Direct 3D game in the background. No problem with Open GL

How much RAM do you and your friend have? Either way probably a driver thing.

I have already used multiple versions of the Omega and Catalyst drivers. I know it is a video issue as I have eliminated all possibility of it being anything else. I have 1.5GB of ram and he has 1.

maybe you could try swapping cards to see if it happens on his, if it does then i guess just send it back under warranty (if it is)

My 9800 pro does that, but actually not very often on Catalyst 5.4. My PC3200 RAM does run at PC1600 though, which probably causes it, as well as a proccy (athlon 2400+ xp) that hits 70+ with ease. Also, a mobo that is total junk (ECS K7VTA3 rev 8)

My 9800 Pro is an AGP card, his x700 pro is a PCIe card. They can not swap. How do I update a Gart driver?

i thought it was something todo with the way ATI make their drivers? im sure someone pointed out somewhere that ATI dont think to much about acclerating the GUI or something whereas nvidia do (the little touches make the difference) and that leads to the cpu doing all the work which is why things go funny?

dont hold me to it though....with all this mechanics and electronics revision...my brains starting to melt

The GART driver is part of your chipset drivers. So just updated them or reload them.

All modern cards accelerate the gui and 3d apps. Ever try draging a window w/o video drivers? The cpu can't even do that smoothly, so the issue is either driver related, or because for some reason the 3d game still uses 100% cpu even while running in the background.

And why the hell would you run a 3d game as a background app anyway? Kinda kills the whole point of playing it, if you ask me.

The thread starter probably wants to load up his hacks.

dguy6789,

Do not take any of the advice recommend here (re: reinstall drivers, try Omega's drivers, etc.). These will not solve the problem.

I reported this bug over at the Rage3D forums, and one of the ATI beta testers responded. The claim is that "desktop drop shadow" (on icons, to make them have a shadow around the right and bottom edges) causes this. However, I beg to differ with ATI's opinion. Changing the desktop and/or 3D application bitdepth from 32-bit to 16-bit completely fixes this problem; I've tested and confirm this "fix" in EVE Online. A pathetic fix/workaround, but still...

Also FYI, this is not specific to your 9800 card. It happened on my 9800 Pro, and it happens on my X800 XT. It ALSO has been known to "go away" on its own, then come back later. What triggers it is beyond me though...
