For some reason, my laptop won't connect to the internet when I am downstairs. When I bring it upstairs where my PC is with the router, it connects right away. I have 2 infant monitors and 2 cordless phones in the house. Could there be interference? Anyway to correct this?

Also, ever since sharing files from my PC to my laptop, my PC is hanging. Also when its not hanging, its very slloooowww.

Any ideas?

I am assuming you have a wireless lan set up, since you mentioned laptop.

Its possible that the cordless phones and infant monitors maybe causing some interference but its unlikely.

try this. carry your laptop downstairs and look at what hapens to the signal strength. it should probably go from excellent to good to poor to low to none. That is probably happening because there maybe too many walls between your laptop and the wireless router. to receive better signal strength through out the house, there is not much you can do aside from placing the wireless access point device in a very central location in the house. Preferably a spot where it is closest to the center of your home (define that as you will). You also have the option of changing broadcast channels much like you would on a cordless phone inside the wireless settings of your wireless access point device. Sometimes switching to different channels gives you better signal strength.

As for the slowing of your computer, that could be a number of things. Look at the network activity when yoru computer is idle. Its possible that you may have a worm (just a wild guess). if you think it might be a virus or worm, run a thorough virus scan. here's a good free one.

good luck and post yoru findings.

I had similar problems although everthing was on the same floor.

Try this site, for an inexpensive antenna reflector that might help.

In my case, the wireless router is in the front of the house and the room in which the laptop is to be used is in the back of the house. I also found that pointing the reflector in the direction of the laptop did not work as well as directing the signal toward a long living room wall which probably bounces the signal through an open section in a wall to get to the room in the back of the house.
