Slow RAID 0 Performance?

I have 2 Seagte Barracuda 60.0GB running in RAID 0 config on my MSI KT266A mobo. I just ran HD Tach 2.61 and my Random Access Time is 14.1ms and a Read Burst Speed of 60.5mbps. Max Read speed of 38794kbps, min 2996kbps, and avg of 26402kbps CPU Util is at 6.4%. Is this normal for a raid setup it seems kinda slow to me. I did defreg before I tested.

dependson what RAID controller you're using and what type of drives... best thing is to inquire with other people that have the same brand / model of stuff as you do. But personally I would say that is a bit slow, my Maxtor DX740 runs quicker than that with a single drive setup....

What is your RIAD controller chip? It als depends on your stripping size. Unless you do video streaming/editing, a smaller stripe size is generally faster. I have tried stripe sizes from 2mb down to 16kb and the best so far for me is 32kb. This is with a Highpoint Rocket RAID 133 card (Highpoint 372A chipset), and two maxtor drives (older version ATA100, 7200rpm, 40gig, 2mb cache)

Random access times 13.1ms
Max. 45245, Min. 22624
average 38098.5 kps
CPU utilization is 10.1%

I have read several posts indicating the the current Barracuda IV's have problems in Raid0, and that Seagate is revising them.

Yep, I have also read that you need to send your drives to Seagate. They will then replace them without cost to you, with drives that are RAID funktionable.

Check out Seagates homepage.

I couldn't find anything about it on Seagate's website but I emailed their tech support. Hopefully I can get some new hard drives to replace these. Just hope they get them back to me fast. I'd hate to be without a computer for a long time.

Just to let you know, i've read that the drives they replace the Barracuda's with are optimized for RAID. Meaning, they may not work too well in a non-RAID configuration.

HD tach is a poor tool for SCSI raid performance measurements. IMHO It gives very poor readings on my 4 drive 36LP X15 array, that others do not.

okay just got the reply from seaget this is what they said:

Seagate has created a version of the Barracuda ATA IV designed especially for use in RAID 0 applications. Because you have reported a problem with this model drive when used in RAID 0, we would like to offer to replace the drives you currently have with drives which are tuned for optimum performance in this application.

We can replace these drives for you, and will just need a little
information please.

So I guess I am getting some new hard drives. 🙂

Please post some benchmarks when you get the new "raid friendly" drives. 🙂

i know this is off topic...but mastertech you have the sickest computer specs i've ever seen...that thing must load up windows in 2 seconds!!
🙂
